I need suggestions on how to help my son stop grinding his teeth during the day. It seems to be getting worse. I took him to the dentist last week because he was actually making teeth sharp (well, one was sharp and others are just showing wear). She does not want to make a grind guard because she says it encourages some kids to grind more and his teeth are still growing/shifting. I remind him during the day, but I wanted to see if anyone has something they have had work for them. He grinds in an odd way that is super loud and not just a little friction. We have told him the consequences of wearing teeth down. He knows he is doing it after he starts, but he just CAN'T stop. I say stop, he stops, looks at me, then grinds again. He gets upset at himself as well, but says he can't resist.

I totally understand his problem. I don't grind during the day but I do at night. During the day I eat crushed ice. My dentist has a fit but I honestly am addicted to it. I take vitamins because someone told me eating ice means you need more iron. It hasn't helped a bit. Have you tried chewing gum? I don't know if it would help but it might be worth a try. Good luck and if you find something that really works please post it here. Thanks.

We tried gum. He would chew the gum, pause to grind, resume gum chewing.
