I was writing an article about crafts and I found a Sharpie Tye Dye shirt one that I thought was cool. Maybe I'm the only one who has never heard of this before...LOL...I don't know. Here's the info: Sharpie Tye Dye Shirt What you need: T-Shirt Rubbing Alcohol Dropper or squeeze bottle Rubber bands Cup or Glass Sharpies of all different colors! What you do: Stretch out a portion of the shirt over your glass or cup and use a rubber band to secure it in place. Using your Sharpies make designs such as dots, swirls, zigzags, flowers, or scribbles! Fill your dropper or squeeze bottle with the rubbing alcohol. Add drops slowly to the area you applied your Sharpie image. You will see the ink begin to spread out and form a different type of design. At some point the amount of rubbing alcohol will not change the image any more so go slowly as to not drench the shirt in rubbing alcohol. Allow the shirt to dry thoroughly. You may repeat this on the back of the shirt. Enjoy!
Thanks! Been planning on doing that at home. My kids did that last year in PS, and still rave about it!
Sounds like fun for Emily. Do you just do one section of the shirt and then move it over to another section after that or does it have to dry before you move it? Could you stretch it over a large bowl and do the whole front at once?
I don't see why you couldn't do a large section. You also use several rubber bands in on section...like a twisted part held by the rubber bands...color in between the bands and get a another effect. I know I described that weird! LOL
Just bumping this since ds and I just did it for our first day of school. I wanted a fun activity and remembered this post. He thought it was so cool to watch his shirt tranform.
So happy you and your son had a good time for it azhomeschooler. I will be doing it as a craft at my daughter's birthday coming up. I will have to post picks, Sommer.
Ok, here is the finished project. Now, I did not plan for it ahead of time, and ds has no white shirts, so we went with gray. I did the alcohol part, but he did all of the squiggles and swirls. This is also after a round in the washer and dryer, so it is lighter than it was after we made it (I could see the water in the washer getting very colorful). Ds loves it and was thrilled that he made it. My biggest advice would be to cover your work area. We were using our kiddie table, and I realized half way through that ink was all over (including my hands).
Sharpie sale At Office Max they have buy 2 get one free...... plus on the front store display they had a $5 coupon which says on the purchase of 3 items.... give them the coupon after they are put into the register then it will work. Don't forget to use your educator card too! ......
Way cool... We have a flea market that sells generic sharpies really cheap, gonna have to grab me a bunch of them and some white t-shirts next weekend!
We did this last summer at a campout. The kids loved it. The only bad part is teh shirts don't keep the color for long, at least ours didn't.
