Background: We use a virtual academy. Sully "has" to have a SS curriculum. (Not by my choice) They sent me an email saying to pick out a new curriculum...

    Here are my options:
Um.... We tried Peak, we don't do Calvert, Cicero doesn't seem to be a "real" curriculum and ABCMouse doesn't offer SS.

    What do I do???

Sully and I are doing fine, we are reviewing maps and reading some cute library books on maps. (I got What your Kinder needs to know and I'm planning one of their units.)

I asked if we could bump up to a 1st grade curriculum but I'm not sold on any of those either. Can Story of the World be done with a kinder student??

We have to turn in "samples" once a month. (Brand new, never mentioned before curve ball in our 3rd year with this place.)

I never heard of a virtual who let you choose, you are one lucky duck. I would pick one of them and use it as a spine and cover the material in your own way. Actually, I like Calvert stuff... for a boxed curriculum anyway ;)

Can't help because I've never dealt with a virtual academy. But why can you not just list What Your K'er Needs to Know as your curriculum? Do you have to choose from a box-type K package, and are these their only approved choices?

Yes those are my "only" option under kinder curriculum. I haven't heard about 1st grade yet. Great choices for other grades but not kinder.

ABCMouse does have a "world around us" section that covers science and social studies.

So...just a thought, have you thought of homeschooling independently rather than using the academy for your kindergartner? WA compulsory age is 8 so you wouldn't even have to file anything for him legally, right?

Looking at ABC Mouse, I'd say use that for your "official" curriculum, then go off on your own for whatever else you want to do...

Just curious -- why is it you don't do Calvert? Have you tried it before and didn't like it? too expensive? something philosophical? You don't have to answer - like I said, just curious.

What do they consider "social studies" at this grade? Do they mean communities/community workers? Or could it be geography/american history? It sounds like you are saying you can only pick from those choices they e-mailed you....but then you are asking about SOTW. If you can only pick what they listed, go with the ABC Mouse World Around Us. If they let you choose something not on the list, look at American Adventures. It's more beginning american history and US geography, not community workers....so I don't know if that makes a difference with them.

I just didn't "pick" that one this year. We picked other curriculum that seemed to work better for him. I had an advisor that asked me questions about him and what type of learner he seems to be and what he enjoys doing.
