Hi everyone. I would like some information from you experienced moms out there.

I am teaching 8th and 10th grade history together. We are using the Mystery of History III this year. I also purchased The Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide as my 10th grader needs geography. Both the 8th and 10th grader will do it.

My question: How have you successful incorporated geography into your history class? My rough idea is to do history three days a week and have geography take up two days a week. One of those days being instruction or classwork done together and the other being individual work.

Have any of you done this with some success? How did you set it up for the year? What are the "must cover(s)" of geography? I have to admit, I do like to know about different peoples but I don't care one bit about the names of different types of landmasses. I taught Geography one year several years ago but I still did not enjoy all of it. I do like the societal aspect of it.

Any comments/ideas:idea: would be appreciated. Thank you!

I have been blesssed with curric.'s that have the two subjects intertwined, up until last year. Since then we have used maps with History, when we study a certain area in time, we look for a map that is in that time period.
So to answer your quesiton follow the History lesson, see where you can interject a Mapwork... do topographical maps relief style with the flour and salt kind of thing.. I have a thread on that, then try to see how many rivers etc you can find in that area, do what they knew then and now maps, that way they can see the difference. One cool way of doing this is with sheet protectors, you trace one of the maps on the protector, then slide the other one inside and you can see the changes.
( I just thought that one up!)

Thanks, those are some good ideas. Do you also discuss social things. For example, religions, food, family structure, etc?

pretty much but depending on the age, we like to discuss the clothing styles with dd, and sturctures they build with ds , as per areas of instrest.. I would share what crops they had, or any import stuff I could find. Our library has great books for using for this sort of thing.
