We are entering our fifth year of homeschooling. We are required to report either through a form of portfolios or standardized test. I honestly can not afford to have portfolios assessed, it cost way to much here. My DDs are going into middle school and high school and want to really learn about what interest them vs. the same old "by the grade textbook". I have been debating unschooling but am really nervous about reporting. Does anyone else unschool and have to mandatory report? How do you do it? Any info on unschooling you can send my way would be great..this is all so foreign to me. I have always followed the school district, for that just in case they have to go back reason. I really want to venture into new territory but really scared and nervous.
My other issue is we live in no man's land. Nothing is open in the winter and all the museums are a good 2 hour drive.. with a 5,3,1,and newborn..those make for some long trips! Please send encouragement or advice!

I would not unschool if you are required to mandatory test. The tests follow typical scope and sequence and standards.
There are plenty of options besides textbooks that utilize many styles of learning.
