http://cbs11tv.com/local/unschooling.unschooled.unschoolers.2.1828086.html I thought it was a good view on unschooling.
Loved the article! I would really LOVE to unschool, but I'm afraid they wouldn't learn all they needed to! lol. I agree that unschooling works incredibly well for young children! I have a 3 year old, and I think unschooling is natural when they are young, and my son really does want to learn about EVERYTHING since nothing is forced. I'll do this as long as I can, but I think, as a parent, you'd worry yourself to death whether your child was learning all the right thing! lol
I like the idea of it but need to have a curriculum to keep in line otherwise we'd never move on. Would like to hear more stories about graduated homeschoolers.
I worry self to death on whether my children are learning all the right things as it is and that's without unschooling. I would never make it as an unschooler. LOL
My favorite comment: "I believe unschooling should be highly regulated." ROFL If you regulate it - it won't be unschooling. I can't comment on the rest of this article - or the comments.
I think totally unschooling would work in a different set of circumstances or can work with SOME children. The world is just not always easy for untraditional ways of living. I can dream of a time where kids would learn what they needed when they needed it and not be pressured to learn a bunch of stuff they will never personally use. So many kids would be able to pursue their passions instead of being told that their passions aren't going to get them anywhere. I would love for my son to get a job where his passions were involved--that would be more successful than getting a high paying job that he hates. I am not ready to go to unschooling here, but it intrigues me greatly. I really do feel that the educational system needs a good shaking, but I would be fighting a mighty big giant. I sometimes wonder: what if we were to stop teaching the large amount of trivia to students and we let them delve in deep to some of their interests. That could help the fact that the current system teaches a mile wide and an inch deep. It would also let kids know that ANY interest can be just as valid as another one.
It's after 1 in the morning, I will have to get to this tomorrow. Thanks for posting it. I like positive things like this that I can show to extended family. Keeps them off my back with concerns and shows them I am not doing this alone. There are a lot of people going to this way of education out of concern for the children.
I think it would be neat to do a combined approach. I would follow a curriculum for the main subjects but then give students time to pursue their areas of interest at a deeper level, building assignments around whatever they choose. If I had all the time in the world....
I liked that they showed adults who were unschooled and how they are productive members of society and not jobless welfare adults that people make it sound like unschooled kids will grow up to be. This was one of the more favorable of the reports I've seen on unschooling.
