Does anyone know of any good US states web sites? I am looking for general info like state motto, state bird and tree, capital, population and so on. Thanks!
I don't know of a website but I bought a book called Mystery States. It is by Daryl Vriesenga, grades 3-5. What it is is a clue game. You give the kid a clue every day and then on the fifth day, if they don't get the answer, you tell them and show them what the state looks like. Here is the website if you wanted to look at it. http://elementary-educators.schoolspecialtypublishing.com/product_results.php Here is an example of a State and there clue cards. On each clue card it has pictures and what not. My kids have found it quite fun and they are k-5 and second grade. Some of them dh didn't know! Clue 1. This state's largest island is a beautiful wilderness national park. Clue2. This state's shoreline is 3,288 miles long. Only Alaska's is longer. Clue 3. If you like cherry pie, come to this state. It has the largest production of cherries in North America. Clue 4. The 'Motor City' area in this state is the leading manufacturer of automobiles in the nation. Clue 5. Four of the five Great Lakes touch its shores. Michigan. Michigan is known as the Water Wonderland. Its spectacular lakes, rivers, and forests make it a leading resort area in summer and winter. Mackinac Island, a popular summer resort, doesn't permit automoblies on the island. Michigan is a U.S. leader in the production of automoblies, furniture and many kinds of fruit.
I forgot to add that this is the site we use. I guess I am retarded. I totally forgot about it when I posted the first time and my dh said you use a website. DUH. Brain dead today I tell ya. http://www.50states.com/

Enchanted Learning has good stuff on the states. When we studied the states east of the Mississippi, I would do their print out on information, their map, and their page about the flag. Also, there's a web site, can't remember where and I've lost the bookmark, of e-postcards from each state. They "spend a week" in each state, starting with the capital, and showing "postcards" from around the state. If anyone knows where it's at, I'd love to have it again! I want to do the states west of the Mississippi soon!
Try this- http://www.lessonplanspage.com/SS23.htm http://members.aol.com/MrDonnHistory/States.html#Maryland
Here's more http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=50+states+lesson+plans Crystal, you can also email the governor's off ice of each state to get a packet of info. I got large, full packages from Maryland and Pa. We're also doing the 50 states, and that's what I plan to do.
Great! Thank you all very much for the info and thanks for the tip Becky about contacting the gov's office.
Crystal, once you get to the governor's website there should be a 'contact ' link. I just emailed a brief message asking if there was a packet of info available to teach with. Our governor's rep sent pencils, a crab patch, a thick packet about Maryland symbols, a state map, and a bunch of leaflets. Pa didn't send extras, just things to read. I wonder what California will send??
