We just did a little learning about owls and I flat out didn't have the money to order an owl pellet this week, so I found this site with a virtual dissection. It's really well done and free. Great for those on a budget or if you or your child is squeamish about dissecting an owl pellet. http://www.kidwings.com/owlpellets/flash/v4/index.htm
Lol, the first time we did it was as a group at co-op. Rachael was about nine at the time, and we had been studying the bones. So there's this group of kids with their owl pellets, and they're trying to identify the bones from sheet, and one of the kids ask, "What's a femur?" And without even looking up, Rachael responds with, "That's the big bone in your leg!" And the instructor's mouth just dropped! I really enjoyed the owl pellets; my kids weren't at all squeamish about it! A few of the others were at first, but really got into it once we got going!
Awesome, thanks! Adding this to my list... For us, time/timing (and sorta money) is an issue in being able to do these labs. I'd have to purchase everything on my own and do my own one on one lab (i.e. no co-op options). Which isn't such a bad thing, really, but I like hearing about great apps and/or websites that can potentially take the place of the lab as a viable option.
And as long as you are on the doody subject, you may as well head over to www.whopooped.org and earn your poop expert certificate! Nice site! BTW: I'm still in shock that you can actually purchase owl pellets. Who knew! LOL
