I am trying to find something good for vocab I can do with a 5th grader and a 7th grader. Thinking about doing Vocabulary Vine or Wordly Wise. Any good feedback for either?

I am up for other recommendations too!

I like both. I also like English from the Roots Up. If I'd known about it in time, I would've used EftRU, but oh well. VV and EftRU teach you to look at root words to figure out meanings. WW just teaches the english words. It depends how you want to teach vocab, I suppose. VV and EftRU both include latin and greek. VV also has a version for life science that goes along with Apologia Biology. You're supposed to start it one year before biology and use it for 2 years. Something to think about if you go with VV, because they're very similar.

BTW... WorldlyWise is available free online. If cost is an issue, you could do that. http://wordlywise3000.com/

Thanks! I think I would like learning the root words and latin and greek meanings! I didn't know WW was free online! Cool.

Ok...that's cool. Why would anyone pay for the books when you can get it free online? I just looked at the WW site and it is great! Would you consider using the same words for spelling too? I am trying to cut down our school time on certain subjects to make more time for History, Science, and Geo. I don't see why you couldn't combine spelling and vocab into one?

The online site doesn't have quite as much as the books do, but that doesn't bother me. Some people prefer the books.

*I* wouldn't use WW for spelling, but that's just *me*. I prefer to teach spelling in a methodical way like Sequential Spelling does. WW is much more random than that. You could do it, though. I mean... the words I had when I was in school seemed kinda random to me, and I'm an excellent speller. Who knows?

I also like English from the Roots Up! My youngest doesn't know it, but he's going to be doing that next year! I also like Wordly Wise.

Is english from the roots up the one that teaches the latin, greek parts too? And is it expensive?

My kids are going to be learning latin-and this would go well with that.

Yes. The book(s) are running $30, but you can get them for $23 at Rainbow. There's two volumes.

I get a discount through our wholesale account and I sell them for 25% off. It is just so hard with so many options avail not to get overwhelmed. Since we started selling curriculum we get a ton of free things from publishers that we review, but often that just confuses me more because I find TOO much I like and then I can't make up my mind! I like to get direct feedback from other homeschoolers who have used it! That always helps. Thanks for all the replies!

I think I am going to do Vocabulary Vines. It is less expensive initially than from the roots up and I liked the web site better. Just got a better feel for it. Not always a good reason, but I suppose as good a reason as any.

I think I will use the science one also, even if my ds goes to ps for High school. He is terrible with remembering names and I think this gives him a way to remember parts and put them together...less actual words. Like phonics for vocabulary.

I'm guessing they're both pretty much similar, so less expensive sounds like a good reason to me!!! I think they might be the same people that did a science one, too. Can't remember the name of it, but it specifically correlated with Apologia Biology. I got it for Racahel last year.

SCIENCE ROOTS!!! That's what it was called!

Well, I have a confession to make! Much of Rachael's stuff I give her at the beginning of the year, and she does it totally independently. She records her test grades, and I will check them from time to time, but she's very good at keeping up with things on her own. So I'm not sure how to answer your questions. Rachael started off doing it, but then got lazy with it. The idea is to teach you the roots, and use it to help you learn the vocabulary in the Apologia Biology book. Yes, I liked what I saw of it, and will probably push it with the other two. Once you've got the roots, it's easier to remember the meaning of the vocabulary words.

No Joke about ERU website. So Hard to navigate and makes no sense! I hate sites like that. I am now considering ERU because it is used with Illiminations lesson plans and I have Y1 and Y2 of Illuminations by Bright Ideas Press.

    So Confused!!!

My boys have enjoyed Rummy Roots. It is a card game that teaches roots. I am also ordering Vocabulary from Classical Roots this week. I haven't used Vocabulary Vine though.
