Just had to tell someone that my 4yo read his first book today!!!! Thanks to Becky's recommendation of the Scholastic sight word readers Preston now is reading books! I love this set! I got my order today. As soon as I got them out of the box he wanted to read. He actually read the first book on his own after I told him what "see" said! YAY! I just love it when kids start to read!

Aren't they nice? The wkbks are set up nicely, too, I think. Jeanne has a few to do yet, then she's done all of them. I think it's a place called Specialty Publishing that makes a K sight words wkbk set. I think they're 15.00 each.

Missy you might want to look into www.readingatoz.com For homeschoolers it is 49.95 a year BUT you get a leveled story, an indepth, easy to read lesson plan with objectives, phonics, comprehension, etc.
Here's an example of an aa-level book-
Under ( the whole book shows a baby monkey under things)
    Under the chair.
    Under the desk.
Under the table........ it's repetitive and easy.
Level A books introduce longer sentences, but the repetition is still there.
    Today we read My Room

    My Room
Here is my room.( picture of a child's bedroom.)
    Here is my fish......
later it switches from 'is' to 'are'.
    Here are my shoes.
    Here are my toys.

The lesson tells you to explain when to use 'is' and when to use 'are'.
I think you'll like readingatoz, and they even give you 30 free books to print out!!
You can do so much with these lessons, too. You can make word walls with the content words, write the sentences from each page on a sentence strip, cut them apart and let the little one put it back together in order.
I think this is the best thing we use each day.

Jeannie had no trouble with the aa level books. I'd lay one on the table, preparing to do lessons, and she'd grab it and read it through before we started!

I know exactly how it feels. My dd started reading on her own last summer. Our library had a program called read by myself. After reading 25 books they get gift cerificates ( free day at the pool, pizza, ice cream)..She loved it and so did I

Becky, I've heard lots of great things about readingatoz.com. I'll really consider using them. I have studydog saved and it's a good introduction to reading thru games. I also have Hooked on Phonics. If I can start working that in I am going to see how he likes it. I also have a few sets of Bob books and easy readers. I have too much to choose from I think.

Good fir him! Way to go. I'd be bragging too...you have every right!:)

Is this a set at Scholastic you're talking about? What's the actual title of it? I have points saved up from the kids so I may have enough points to buy it, unless it's not too expensive. That sounds like something my boy would love.

The set I got is called "Sight Word Readers" , Learning the first 50 sight words is easy as a Snap. It is a Scholastic exclusive with their name on the box. It was out of stock there so I ordered it from www.academicbookservices.com and got it quick. They are tiny little books in color. They are similar to the Bob books if you are familiar with them. They also have a workbook that goes along with the books if you are interested.
