This post stems from the gas prices thread where I said I might be moving to the city because my husband has to commute such a long distance and these high gas prices are really putting a squeeze on our budget.

We made a decision, we are staying put, and we are not moving. If it means that in the future that my husband has to quit his job, then so be it. I am really happy about our decision because I did not want to move again, especially to the city. It’s not a good place to raise kids with all of the crime. This is such a relief, I have been so upset and stressed out about the prospect of moving.

One of the reasons we decided not to move is living in the country we have so many more opportunities for the kids to learn new things that they would not have in the city. Things like the study of animals and insects that are not in the city. You can’t keep chickens in the city, or livestock, so the kids would miss out on a bunch of stuff if we moved. The kids would miss out on having such a large area to play and explore and would be confined to a small yard if we lived in the city instead of the acres to explore that they have with us living here.

Plus here we have privacy which is really important to me especially after reading the other post where CPS is called on people just because people dislike homeschooling families. If we moved we might have moved in next door to one of those people and have CPS at our door because we homeschool the boys.

I am really happy we decided not to move and it feels like a giant weight has been lifted off my shoulders since we made our final decision. It is stressful that he may have to quit his job in the future but not nearly as stressful as the prospect of having to move again.

I'm happy for you guys. Given the choice I would move to the country in a heart beat no matter what the price of gas is. We have 200 acres that we want to build on but can't move now and it is so frustrating. My husband owns a buiness in Houston so moving 2 hours away isn't an option now. But we will as soon as it is feasable for us.

I think there are so many many chances for kids to learn in the country! Animals & nature abundant. Oh you are making me want to move now!!

Dont' fret about quitting - we are in a similar setting - we are moving about 1/2 hour or so north, so the commute will be about 1 full hour or more. However, we are getting a motorcycle for him in the meantime (better gas mileage) and may co-workers live up there so he can carpool.

But the good news. For the last 6 month, I have been telling EVERYONE that this gas crisis won't last long, becuase in America, the land of ingenuity, when you dont' want to pay a lot for something, SOMEONE will invent a way to do it cheaper and better.

At the beginning of 2009, a full electric car is coming on the market that goes 65 miles an hour. Plus, the first water car (uses the hydrogen in water to power the car - I think there is a you tube video about the first guy who did it) is coming out at the same time.

Now these cars will be pricey, BUT you can also buy electric and water conversion kits for current vehicles - still a bit pricey, but not as much for a new car!

finally, more places are dipsensing Ethanol and other variations of biofuel, which our car can CURRENTLY use, but there are no stations near us.

Ahh, America - It was only a matter of time before someone would get us off oil.

    Monkey Mamma,

I never thought I would say it but I am excited about staying home lol. I dont want to move and am so glad that decision is over with. Your right there are so many more opportunities for the kids to learn in the country. Next year we are doing several raised bed gardens and hopefully (if all goes well) we will be raising chickens and rabbits by then as well.

    gwenny,

I found something really intresting that we are thinking about getting for our next car. It looks a bit odd, and I dont know if we can actually afford it but it gets really good gas mileage. If we can afford it I guess it dont matter if everyone stares at us lol.

Look up www.flytheroad.com. I cant post a link yet or I would. Its kind of wild looking but it might be the way we go when we buy our next car.

Glad you were able to make a decision that makes you and your family feel happy. We live in the sticks too but I would not trade it for anything!

It's good to be home, again!
