We did that in second grade-when I was in second grade. Isn't it great? We also made homeade bread to go with it.
I'm so glad to hear that the butter making went well! I've noticed that in a few weeks, our lessons on colonial times have us making butter the same way. Gives me hope that it will work. So far, all of our science and cooking "experiments" have worked this year. Hope that continues!
We made butter this way twice this week. Ds loves it! We buy raw milk, so we save the cream for ice cream and now butter. I wonder if life was more fun before they tried to turn everything into a convience.
I love the idea of making butter, I will have to look into it. We always make homemade bread the butter I bet would be just wonderful on it. Does anybody have a good link for directions. Also we read the little house books at bed time. i don't know if the kids like it as much as me and dh do. I remeber reading them when I was little. The one thing I remeber most is when they cooked the pigs tail and ate it, and used some innards for a ballon. Aggie
Do you think boys would go for the Little House books? Ds is 5 and we're always looking for what chapter book we're going to read next.
My son and I have have read a couple of them. He enjoyed them when he was a little younger. (8ish). We have never made butter but have talked about it. We will have to do this when we do our Thanksgiving unit. And homemade bread. Yummy!
Maybe I'll try reading him one. Right now we're reading Pippi Longstocking and he likes that, so who knows?
Phillip is reading the Little House Chapter Book right now called "Farmer Boy Days". I picked that one out just for the reasons you said, D'Mom. I didn't think he'd appreciate all the GIRLS in the other one. He says it's "pretty good". Has your son read "Hank the Cowdog" books? They're GREAT!
Okay Ladies, not having read all the post here, Will putting cream in a jar with a marble work? I have found some recipes on making butter. This is what I have found. Other than buying a butter churn. I have found some on the internet, but they are very expensive. If you do it in a jar, will the marble break the jar? I think this would be so cool. My kids would love it.. so would I.
Yes, cream in a jar with a marble will work. No, the marble won't break the jar. Make sure you use HEAVY whipping cream!
I second that Hank the Cowdog books are awesome! We are huge Hank fans here. Every time we go to the library we get a new one and we read a chapter or two every night. Right now, we're taking a break and reading the original Stuart Little. I am a HUGE Little House fan. My mom bought me the set when I was about eight and I read them countless times. Then, when I moved out after college, somehow they got lost. Later, after I was married, I got a hankerin' to read them again so I started checking them out of the library. My DH surprised me that Christmas with a set of my own. He'd gone to multiple used book stores, trying to find the same exact set I'd had. I thought it was one of the most romantic gifts I'd ever received. Anyway, I've always wanted to read the books to the boys, but I don't know if they'd be interested. I thought about starting with Farmer Boy. At the very least, it would be valuable in showing them that they don't have anywhere NEAR as many chores as they could have! Kari Mom of Zachary (9) and Eli (5)
I read them to my boys when they were that age. I know that it deals mostly with Mary and Laura, but it also has a dog and Mr. Edwards, and exciting adventures that the boys could relate to! My boys liked it! They'd draw pictures illustrating stuff we read about.
okay this is how easy it is to make butter, I made it by accident trying to make whipped cream! if you whip cream too long it turns into butter. YUMMY!
My second grade teacher read "Little House in the Big Woods" to us, and I thought it was SO boring! I did read it to the girls later, and it was OK. I own the complete set, and may one day read them all.
Well we tried it!! It really worked! I think I was more excited than the kids. lol We used the buttermilk left from the butter and made homemade biscuits. And topped it with our homemade muscodime (sp?) jelly.
