I decided last night that because it was going to be cold here this morning I was going to make cinnamon rolls and hot cocoa for breakfast for the family. I got up at 6am, put on my coffee, preheated the oven, woke Samantha up for school and took the dogs out. I walked back into the house and BAM the electricity goes off. Samantha and I were standing in the kitchen with three dogs in total darkness.

I went and woke dh up and he went out to check the breakers which was actually quite funny - him in flip flops, jeans and no shirt with a flashlight in the dark outside in 40 degree weather. Anyway he can't find anything wrong and our closest neighbor still has power because we can see his security light in the distance. I call the power company and get an automated message system meanwhile dh is showering by candlelight and my teenager is trying to get dressed and do her hair and makeup in the dark. AND I have NO coffe!

Nobody got breakfast, no lunches were made and I didn't get coffee! We leave the house while it is still dark and on the way to the high school we pass the power company in route to our house. By the time I got home 10 mins later the lights were back on. I could finally have my caffine! Ok so I might have a slight addiction problem here. Hello my name is Tiffany and I am a coffee adict.

For a while I was freaking out thinking of all the things I have to do today that require electricity. Anyway....that was my morning. It was made all better by fresh hot cinnamon rolls that Gracie and I shared while reading Pippi Longstocking in our pjs.:)

I read the first line of your post and immediately checked your location - yup! We have the cooler weather, too!

We had power this morning (Thank goodness!). But in spite of hauling out comforters last night, the boys seemed really surprised at the "cold" this morning. ( I put it in quotes because in a couple months, I think this won't seem quite so cold!)

We were just talking about this the other day - the modern conveniences that we actually take for granted now. I had commented to my husband about whether we'd be able to survive the "dirty 30's" when electricity and all the modern conveniences we have today didn't exist. Do people know how to build fires now (without lighters or matches). Life as we know it would come to a screaching halt for many (my family included I do admit).

Glad your power is back on and you got your daily "fix". Hope your day gets better

Sandra you guys are probably colder than we are. It was 40 here this morning and I am about an hour or so north/west of Houston out in the country. Compared to last year this is nothing. We spect Christmas in St.Paul and it was 8 and snowed the entire time which was beautiful to visit but I wouldn't want to live there!

Brenda you are so right! My whole day without elecricity flashed before me eyes! lol! My oldest is dancing at a peprally today and my youngest is cheering during pregame at tonights football game. I NEED to charge up my batteries. I also have to make a huge container of hot chocolate for the dance team for tonight which requires boiling water. I need to shower and DRY my hair! I was like "oh my gosh please tell me I don't have to spend the day doing all this at my mother's house because she will drive me insane and I just don't need that today!".

We have a wood burning fireplace now that we have moved and a pit for outside fires. I do not however have a fireplace screen or any of the tools we need. I MUST go buy some soon! We have a decent supply of wood but not enough for winter. I do know how to cook over an open fire which would come in handy if needed. We also have a generator thanks to living near the Gulf of Mexico where all the hurricanes come in. I live far enough away from the coast now for that not to be a problem but that generator sure did save us when we lived in Houston and had to power for 14 days after Hurricane Ike hit.

It is cold!!! I want my Texas summer to come back already. Ok tantrum over.

I remember a while back a newspaper running an article about how much we complain about flight delays, yadda yadda and after each line he would remind the reader, "you are flying, like up in the air, on a machine that cuts down your travel time by months. YOU ARE FLYING!!!" He did a much better job of getting the point across about how much we complain about when we live in one of the most convience driven eras.

Oh Teri Blackstock has a good fiction series about this too called The Restoration Series. Basically every modern convience is wiped out because of a massive EMP. They have to re-learn how to do everything.
