Wlcome, Denver Jay! I like the way you are doing it. It seems to work for you, and also for your son. Being "open" to "moods" at this point is a good idea.

A friend of mine was going to school for her teaching degree (she changed her mind and switched to psychology! LOL) but for 2 semesters I helped her with her studying and homework and projects and lesson plans. So like you, I get how detailed a teacher's lesson plans are and don't see what we are doing this year as real lesson plans. Though since we unschooled until this year this is def a big jump for me!

We just do the next chapter in our books. We just keep moving forward. I'm not real concerned with 'we must finish this book by the end of the school year' type thing.

We were doing AOY1 until this week and I didn't like a lot of the stories (Cause I'm a conservative prude:shock:) but here is what I came up with for us as far as planner-weekly.

White spaces are things the boys will do together. Green spaces are just for the 3rd grader. Blue spaces are just for my kindergartner.

My kids are young so we try to keep most of the lessons under 15 minutes for the younger one or I lose him, except with reading because he's really focused on learning to read right now. Then some days we get stuck on chasing rabbit trails like one day a week or two ago we started our day with history/geography and that's all we did all day-we just kept chasing those history/geography rabbit trails until bedtime...but that's okay, they were loving it and absorbing it so it works.
