DD is almost done with 7th grade. She was wanting to do 8th over the summer and start 9th in the fall. She's always been advanced. All her courses are advanced through K12 right now. Since we are going to stop k12 after this year we are trying to figure out what to do next. I had her make a list of the classes she wants to take and when I looked it up they were all needed in high school. She's finishing up pre algebra so she will need algebra 1 next which is on the texas transcript list for high school. She wants to do geography, spanish, biology and dance which would also all be needed in high school. The only difference would be she'd skip 8th grade English/LA. I'm thinking we should just skip 8th all together. What are your thoughts on skipping grades. I just worry that I'm missing something. Thanks.

I wouldn't "skip" - but go ahead and start the high school credits. Even our local middle school here is starting 7th graders in Algebra and foreign language and giving them high school credit for it. She might graduate early which is great just don't call it a "grade" :)

I think you can do like chicamarun suggests, but if she graduates early it will be very similar to skipping a grade.

I think if she is ready and able to do it, why not?

It really doesn't matter, if she does high school work in "8th grade", you can count it towards high school. If all or most of her classes are on that level, I think it would be fine to skip.

As far a English, I find there is a LOT of repetition, so skipping will probably be fine. If she can handle it-fine, if not-you can always go to 8th grade English books.

I'm in a similar situation with my 7th grade Dd12. She will only be using 8th grade science since I don't think she is ready for the high school level courses. I'm not sure what to call her either, but I'm thinking that I will call her 9th grade and still have her complete 4 years of high school since I found that they can easily earn most of their graduation credits in three years. It makes for a nicer pace. If she still gets done quickly, I'll end up with a 15/16 yo graduate and I don't know that she will be mature enough to start college at that time.

All that to say, I'd just let her skip right into 9th grade.

okay we skipped 7th grade math, and almost skippted 9th grade science. We are cutting it down because we did most of it last year.
We started keeping count of credits last year with 9th grade math, this year in 9th he is doing 10th, I did this because he totally tested out of 7th with the assessment I did.

So- my suggestion? Test her on each level. If she passes the assessments, or the ones you take via each curric to place them, placement tests I believe they are called. See where she sits, and if she is ahead, put her where she deserves or desires to be.

I say to test because then you know you are not missing anything.
I have not done any of the big CAT or anything tests here with my dd, she is in college now second year and we are awaiting scholarship results on a couple levels. Then she will transfer accordingly.

Ds1 took one test, he is in third year of a two year certificate and he went out to school stayed in regular grades and all that.
I am glad my dd went at her own pace, she continued on through her lessons did what shhe had to learn and continued on. We had a few Life Paks we tested her out of by doing all the self tests and life pak at 100 percent correct I kind of got the idea she got it already lol.
she did how ever stay plugging along grade after grade and could have tested beyond her grade at any point. I could have graduated her way earlier than two years. So when ds 2 knew the work too well for my reteaching it, I jumped him.

    'nough said? lol

Brooke, find a friend two years older than her to take class with it will help when she starts. my dd was nervous about a class she knew no one in at first, now she started English101 with a friend who dropped the class and left her hanging. She is doing okay though, hanging in there. I am seeing maturity finally, after near two years of college.

Would her mom qualify as a friend? ;) She is leaning toward getting her RN, as am I, and I'm waiting for her to graduate from high school before I start back to school.
