monkey mama We are usually straight forward too, and tell them because we want our children to get a better education.
when they ask if I am qualified to teach my kids I tell the the truth, neither are half our teachers in my city. We do have a few outstanding teachers and a couple I know trying to get hired at the moment who are going to be awsome if they get in.
But over all, I know my dd would not be 2 years advanced, maybe one if she was lucky to get noticed. My sons are excellent students but somedays they just do not like working on stuff. I don't think the schools system would argue with them and force them to finish school work before being sent to the principals office Lol,
    (grin)

    What I want to say:

We're just not very big on socialization and want awkward kids.

    What I really say:

Juan Carlos needs one on one attention and would not get the best education in a class with 29 other kids, and homeschooling allows us to incorporate religious education as well.

I like that! That is close to what I say, I tell them dd is advanced and ds needs that consistant incouragement to stay on task some days. I can't imagine him in school in kindergarden and first, he was fun then! lol!

When I was asked I semi-explained why we pulled my son from school and said, this is what is best for him at this time. He needs the one on one, he needs personalized schooling, and no one can give that to him like I can!

Most people I talk to agree that the state of our schools in this country are in a dire state. However, I usually explain that because of our life style it is the only solution.

Most people are just curious I think.

    :p You crack me up!

A couple times I have wanted to say, Now lets get really ridiculous, I am doing this because you are a bad mom, I don't like your kids and I think you are stupid! LOL

Edited to say: As far as socializing, my kids have always been outgoing as my dh and myself. I have never had worries about soc. skills because if my kids acted like the kids in our ps, I would not feel I had done my job.

A kid, the same age as my one son got caught blasting out street lights with a bb gun, got caught doing under age drinking and tossed a bag of trash in front of others on the side walk. If this is a well adjusted and socially healthy kid, well I like hs-ers.

I don't find that I get asked "why?" Typically people think it is pretty cool/awesome and I'd say I get more people that are being drawn to homeschool their children that are put in my path. My spiritual gift is service and teaching so....it's a perfect fit. ;)

The ones I love are the people that have kids with animal manners and they say "oh we could never do that". ROFL geez I don't think I could school your kids either. lol Anyway...bad bad bad.

I gotta say when I first started hsing I was terrified of getting asked questions. I think I would talk too much at that point trying to explain myself. Now I laugh at the way I used to feel. I have found that you never know what you're gonna get when you get asked. Sometimes the person is generally interested and sometimes they are just being jerks.

Today someone asked me , during a discussion about politics and home schooling, what about the parents that are just not smart enough to teach, you know just plane dumb people? ( I had to laugh when she said that,) but I took her question serously and told her you don't have to be smart to home teach, there are so many internet options out there you can not even speak English and teach your child at home!

TMom, that is so true, what about some of the teachers that are so dumb to teach, like I tell everyone I have seen book smart teacher and common sense one. So, it works both ways.

I just learn to tell people I do it because I want too and that is that.
