What do you think of kids using ereaders?

I must say I'm torn on the issue of ereaders. I, too, love the feel of "real" books. However, my sons are now reading HUGE books that would probably be easier to pack around as an ereader. My oldest son made a point the other day though, that he can see the progress he's making in that huge book by where his bookmark is. Not as significant on an ereader...

DH is not a reader. He finds it inconvenient to try and take a book with him for lunch breaks, etc. Since getting a smart phone though, he has read a couple of DOZEN books!! The phone is on his hip during work, and if he gets the chance to take a 10-min break he opens his app and starts reading where he left off. If a call comes in, the phone goes right back on his hip and he's off. I realize that is different than the ereader, but I also can see the benefit of having that format available for him. Our boys also get a kick out of talking to Dad about something they have all read- boys in book form and Dad on his smart phone.

My two cents... and I'm sure we'll be visiting this topic as Christmas presents in the next year or two! (Don't forget my kids are older though. Thanks Amie for the heads-up about the accessibility issues.)

Kindle does come in color now. Mine isn't, but I was on a Kindle forum where folks were debating it. I advised the guy to save his money and just get black and white since it's all print anyway and TONS of people started telling us about all the kids books in color, including the author I mentioned. I liked his books so well I bought them for my b & w. So apparently they're out there.

I have a Kindle and was torn when I recieved it for my Mother's day present...I love books too much...or so I thought! I LOVE my Kindle now!!
Yes it has WiFi and yes you can get porn ( I don't search for it and it doesn't pop up either) and if your kids are searching ( or type in an innocent word on Google) for porn they will find it regardless if you have an ereader or not. So many phones or other devices are WiFi capable that if they want it they will find it ( or like I said through a search).
I have a "book" on my Kindle (that was free) that already has a list of 200+ Kindle friend websites, my kids use this to search the internet but honestly they like it for Facebook only anyways and if you own a Kindle you would know that it takes awhile to upload pics from WiFi so porn sites would be useless.
Yes, they make a color screen Kindle but it is a lot of money $400.

I have over 120 ebooks on my Kindle and they were all FREE and are NON-Classic. I have several games that were free also. I paid for the calendar app, Monopoly and the notepad app ,thats all ( and they were all 99 cents each). Here is the link for the free books:

*** WARNING*** on this link the pages are unfiltered so there are naked people on some covers ( **most romance novels***), BUT there is a by category list on the side so little eyes don't see the racy book covers********

There are childrens, teen, cooking and even textbooks available for free. Some don't last long so get them while you can. You can also download all the books to your computer via the Kindle app download if you don't have a Kindle but want one of the books.

Cracks me up that this thread is here - I've JUST submitted an article to the Washington Times Communities about this very issue! I wrote about how South Korean schools are going completely paperless - no more paper books at all. I said, "These kids will never know the sheer joy and delight of flipping through a book, feeling the pages slide by as you scan the pages for pictures. They’ll never smell the delightful aroma of printed ink and savor the beauty of a beautiful cover illustration." (It's still with my editor so isn't published yet)

That being said - we love our Kindles! There are definitely things I like about the ereader (not having to cart around a whole bagful of books, being able to find good English books anywhere in the world...), but it's sad that many kids will never really learn to appreciate good ol' paper.

Our Kindles are the very old models so we can't access the internet at all. We do have wireless on there so, if we're in the USA, we can buy a book and have it download onto the Kindle through cyberspace.
