    Hi,

I am thinking about using ETC next year but was wondering what I could use for reading to go along with it. Any suggestions for 1st grade?

I use the recommended Sonlight readers. I started with Fun Tales, but had to skip the I Can Read It books because both my boys found them incredibly boring. The other books Sonlight has are great!

We've paid for a few things but so far my son's favorite has been progressive phonics, and it's free!

I've always just let the kids read pretty much whatever they want. We have a huge book collection at home & we visit the library every week. Right now ds picks up 2-3 books from the library each week - 1 for me to read to him, 1 for him to read, and sometimes 1 for dd to read to him. Right now, he's into reading chapter books, which is why he only gets 1 to read. When he was reading shorter, easier books, I let him get a lot more. Basically, I just make sure we always have books around for them to read.

I used ETC and McGuffy readers for dd. They are old-fashioned, but she was so excited to learn to read with the same books that Laura Ingalls learned with. :) We also have a huge assortment of various readers at home and we got lots from the library. (an assortment for the kids to read and for me to read to them)

Ditto. He pretty much reads all day anyway, but we read a chapter book together at bedtime. We go to the library, have a bazillion books at home, and so on. Progressive phonics is also good. I just can't bring myself to spend money on "readers" when there's so much stuff at home. If you want, you could also do Beyond the Code at the same time as ETC. It's for comprehension and thinking skills.

We used Hooked on Phonics K-2 (Deluxe). It matches up incredibly well with the first 2 or 3 ETC books. I moved a few lessons around in ETC to get it to match perfectly.

We are using Bob books, reading level books, and the site Progressive Phonics (they have printable books). The is our first year using ETC and we like it.
