Growing up I had cousins who lived in Maryland. Well, to us kids living in the hills of NY, we considered them Southerners and laughed at their accents. Now I get teased!

I have had people up north just want to hear me talk. I have a real southern accent that has the southern draw.

I have a southern accent, but when I go on the air (Radio) my voice turns completely broadcast (ie: generic)

    You guys are funny!:D

I just met a homeschooling Mom from Buffalo, NY. She laughs at the way Wisconsinites close schools for a foot or a little less than a foot of snow. She said that in Buffalo they might close schools for 2 or more feet of snow, but not 1 or less. I thought that was pretty funny seeing as how we are always making fun of schools who close for a couple of inches.

We have actually had our schools close because of the heat. If the power goes out, temps of a 100+ turn classrooms into ovens when the A/C isn't running.

I remember one year it was 117 and the power went out. The school contacted the electric company and were told the electicity wouldn't be on for a few hours. By the time the buses arrived, we were all sweating because the classrooms were baking.

I can't imagine what we would do with "feet" of snow. We honestly do shut down schools and businesses if we get flurries that cover the roads at all. Our public schools have really shut down just from the weather man saying we had 100% chance of snow. They called off school the night before and then we didn't get anything!

We've had 35-40 degree weather which is above average (yay) so there has been some melting. We have about 10" of snow on the ground right now.

Dh had to go outside and break up the ice in the driveway because I fell!

Our last snow fall brought a foot and a half of snow, the week before Christmas. The snow started falling early in the morning and the schools closed before it was sticking.
I also heard that some schools released the students early. So I am not sure which is true.
But my point is that it ended up being good that either happened because we weren't planning on that much snow in one day. If the schools didn't close or shut early, the students and teachers would have been stuck for a while.
So I am assuming some schools close because they are trying to be cautious; hoping for the best but planning for the worst.

I just read through all of this.

I have a confession... when DS went to PS, if there was snow on the road in the morning I kept him home, if there was a delay for snow, I kept him home.... we are very used to Pennsylvania winters.... but we live on a mountain in the middle of nowhere, going down off the mountain in any direction requires a winding road with some very high steep cliffs on one side of the road or the other.

I know I would keep Vicki at home in case like that.

I was driving a bus years ago. We started down a little hill and hit ice. The bus started going sideways. It scared me so bad. It got back under control. I was scared for the kids. I knew I was responsible for them. The kids loved it. Of course they thought it was funny.

I call our driveway the bobsled run... we slide going down all the way... it's quite steep and about 1/4 mile long, we live at the top.. when we come home we start out on the road with a bit of speed and we have to keep on it hard to get back up... even in the truck, we slide this way and that and the kids love it... it kills me that they can sit back there and giggle...lol.

    LOL!!!!!
Sommer, what a hoot! I need to send Ems that way one winter. She would have a blast.

My parents live on 40 acres and they live at the top of the hill too. There driveway runs downhill but it is hard to sled down it because it curves all the way down.

Edited: changed own hill to down hill! LOL

Garrett has found quite a few good runs right in our yard.. and then when we can all go sleigh riding (which I can't this year :( ), we go down to the cow pastures... there is a hill there that is sooooo wild... we ALL love it... I will have to take some pics of it this weekend

    What a blast!!!!!!

My bil takes us to some steep hill in Colorado to go sledding. It is a little too steep for my taste as I am a baby LOL, but Ems loves it. Small hills are more to my liking.:)
Everytime she goes down I close my eyes or look away. Seeing her zoom down the hill makes my stomach turn. She said that if we ever move to Colorado, we need to go to that place. I told her that her uncle or dad could take her, I will stay at the bottom of the hill with the little tots.

I'm a transplanted southerner. I spent ten years in Atlanta, and I'm on my 3rd Pennsylvania winter. There are many reasons I am glad to be out of Atlanta, but I definitely miss GA in the winter (not so much in the summer).

Atlanta was listed as one of the top 5 worst cities to drive in several years ago. This is what I have observed happens in Atlanta to drivers:
    - Normally, on 285, people go 80 when the limit is 55
    - When ice comes, those people don't slow down. Well, sometimes they slow down to 65 on the ice
    - Since there is no salt, as mentioned, they become insane moving hazards
    - You couldn't pay me to drive in Atlanta with ice.

Didnt read through all the way so sorry if this is a double post, but the other day when there was ice here there were, the last time I looked 400 reported accidents. That is why we close everything down in Dallas when there is something that seems minor to a northerner LOL
