Here our instructions say something about us required to have similar or close to "what is offered by the public school" From what I can tell that means; Math ( up to 11th grade) Science (Up to 11th grade) ( includes life science, biology, chemistry and physics) History ( all the way through 12th includes state history and world and US history and government) Spanish + 2 years of foreign language in high school PE ( we fail miserably here and it was my fajvorite subject in school!) English/Lang arts- creative writing, grammar, spelling reading and writing, etc up to 12th grade and electives such as ARt, Drama, Chorus, band, etc. HOme Ec is covered in health now I guess? Health! on grade school, then again in JR high, and Sr high?
I am also in NY and I do not find the requirements that difficult. Right now I am doing high school and we will be done with most of the required stuff this year. Sd will still need more history and English but officially that is it. Now she will be getting more math, science, language and electives but they are not required classes at this point. The paper work is pretty easy to fill in also. I am normally late because dh does Bio and he is always behind in grading especially the labs. I have not started elementary yet but it looks like it will be pretty easy to get the requirements in and they are pretty much stuff I would cover any how.
Like TMom said, we are required to teach the subjects the public school teaches. This is the list that I received from the group I was in. It helps so I can make sure I have it all covered. Language/Phonics/Grammar Spelling/Vocabulary Reading Life Skills Math Science History/Civics/SS Geography PE Health Field Trips
We are required to cover: Language arts biological & physical science math social studies fine arts health & physical development honesty justice kindness moral courage and instruction has to be in English. Those are pretty much the only requirements we have. We don't have to do standardized test, portfolios,or any other type of assessment. We don't have a certain number of days or hours to do. We don't have to report to anyone or get our curriculum or plan for the year approved. The only time we have to be in contact with anyone is, if the child was in ps & we pull them out, we have to inform the district that the child is being removed from the district (so they don't come after us for truancy). I want to know why hsers are required to cover honesty, justice, kindness & moral courage. The public schools don't teach those things. In fact, they breed the opposite.
