What temp do you set your thermostat at during the winter?

I am just curious. We have ours set at 66 degrees, I know that is cold but we truely can't afford to set it any higher. For the month of Dec. our bill was $100.00 more a month freezing!

It is soooo cold under my sink cabinet that my Cascade dishwashing detergent is now frozen.

I am freezing in my house today, feel like being wasteful and turning up the heat so I can just thaw out, even for just a few minutes.

What temp do you have yours set at?

We set ours at 70. I still on colder days wear a sweater. Wow I think I would freeze at 66. Can you put in a fireplace or something to help with the heat bill? Good luck and sending warm thoughts.

Our house is an odd shape so the heat from the wood stove doesn't really make its way into the west side of the house. We have natural gas on the west side but unfortunately cant afford to be warm. The west side has the utitlity room, kitchen, one bathroom and bedrooms. We have a pile of blankets on our beds to stay warm.

Mamabear, I hope your pipes don't freeze. Can you shut some vents so it only goes in the rooms you need it?

Our central heater is about 35 years old and when it was inspected several years ago it was red tagged, can't run it, dangerous! So we have a small natural gas standing heater in the west part of our house.

We heat mainly with wood but have an oil furnace too. I had to turn it on this morning because it was so cold. Once the wood heater got built back up the furnace hasn't come back on. It stays nice and warm in the living room/school room, dining room, kitchen, and den. The back side of the house and the upstairs are cold sometimes. I like the bedroom cold so it doesn't bother me. It saves us a ton of money on the oil bill and we never pay for wood. Someone always seems to have trees down that need cutting up and hauling away. I am not crazy about wood heat but our house is big and old so it takes a lot to heat it.

We keep ours at 65 during the day and 55 at night. A couple times a year we will use our woodburning stove but we usually save our wood in case of a bad winter snow wise. Sometimes I do get cold but as long as I have slippers on I'm fine.

    65-68ish.

If it's warmer outside (40-50) we'll set it at 65. When it gets REALLY cold outside we raise it to 68.

We had new insulation put in our attic last fall, it's really making a difference this year. Our bills are HALF what they used to be during the winter.

    YAY!!!

68 to 70 during the day (though I turn it down to about 63 on Co-op day when we're not at home), and about 60 at night.

Between 65-67 during the day and 63 at night. Our heat does not distribute evenly due to the odd architecture in our home (two-story living room, open floor plan for the rest of the downstairs and a balcony-type hallway upstairs) Basically, it's all open except the bedrooms, so all the heat goes upstairs. It'll be SCORTCHING upstairs set at 65, so we turn it down at night. It's always a little cool downstairs, so we use a small electric heater to keep the family room comfortable without having to turn up the heat.

Mamabear, I cannot be that cold! Turn up the heat at least to knock the chill off. Then get a small heater to keep in the room you are in! I'd worry about your pipes freezing, too, if it's that cold under your sink!

So glad it's not that cold here too often!

    67 degrees inside my house.
I sometimes put on a room heater for just a little while if it's too cold in one of the rooms I'm in. I've also started wearing my robe around the house or I put on extra layers.

Our outside temp right now is 22 degrees, but with the wind chill it feels like 8 degrees.

We keep it around 68-70 day and night. My girls room still gets chilly at night so sometimes I still put a space heater in their room as well.

Burrr. It is no fun being cold. We have a wood stove. I don't know what temperature the house is but it is always too cold for me.

Our house has a long hall with bedrooms and bathrooms. The heat does not reach those rooms and we keep those doors shut. Needless to say, the beds have a lot of blankets.

The only thing that I have found that keeps me warm is FLEECE (Polartec) or wool. I wear a fleece sweater, fleece socks, and expedition weight base layer (long underwear) in the house. In the morning I also wear a wool knitted cap. It is a bit confining wearing so many clothes, but at least I am warm.

Don't know how true this is but have heard that it takes more energy to warm up a house than to keep it warm. Perhaps raising the temperature a few degrees may not cost much.
