    Hi all,

I know the homeschool section has a website but I couldn't find any sort of tips regarding my situation.

I am a certified grade k-6 teacher in Ontario. I haven't been able to get a job in the public school system, so I've been working in a daycare for almost a year and constantly looking for a school age teaching position.
I'm starting to think a public school job is not happening for me and am now looking at alternatives: private education, tutoring etc.
I have recently found out a family around the corner wants to have their 12 year old homeschooled by a certified teacher because he is bored at school.
(I haven't talked to them yet).

I thought this was something generally taken on by parents, I didn't realize people would hire teachers to do it.

Does anyone have any experience homeschooling children that aren't theirs?

    Just wondering...thanks.

    Amy

I posted this question originally on the atozteacher forum and several users suggested putting it up here, too.

    Amy, Welcome to the board...

Some families will opt to have their child taught by a professionally trained teacher (in fact, I think there are a couple teachers amidst this group). Some parents want the homeschool option but fear they can't do it on their own...

I have a good friend who home schools her own children and who has come to my rescue a couple times when I had our son home last year... I had to work a couple mornings and she kept my son while I worked and she taught him. I also know that she has home schooled other children quite successfully.

I'm not sure if I remotely answered the question, but there are families out there who will pay privately to get the education they want their child to have. In NB, there are a couple private schools in our area. I don't know what's available in ON, but that might be something to consider looking into. I really don't think you could beat the opportunity to teach a child one on one - it's awesome!

    Good luck in your search...

You need to also consider the legality of it. Some states would consider it a "private school", rather than a homeschool. Also, you'll really need to understand WHY the family homeschools. Another option would be to set yourself up as a curriculum consultant for homeschoolers, helping them determine their curriculum needs and what they should be teaching their children.

Oh silly Jackie - she lives in Canada with me

I do know of a teacher (within our church) who doesn't teach in the public school system, but chooses to tutor/privately educate. I'll ask her for some ideas and then pass them on to you.

I can relate, I have been working in the early child care profession for 10 years and I have past experience as a teacher assistant in Special Education and can not get hired onto the school district in Florida. Plus, I am working on my ESE degree that gives me more qualifications, but oh no- they hire others without qualifications. My advise is to open a small private school of your own and teach children that have been kicked out of school that want to learn.

We have local tutoring services that employ teachers to tutor at their place of business. We have a cousin who quit teaching and did this! She loves the hours and the fact that it's usually one on one and tailored to each child.

I answered over at atoz about hSing kids that aren't mine but I just thought of something else. :)

If you don't homeschool kids one-on-one, there are all these online schools now, Where the kids are considered to be in a School and not homeschooled. I looked at some of them and I remember several said that a certified Teacher would make regular visits to to your home... I suppose one of those might be hiring teachers... Also places like Sylvan Learning Centers (I don't know if they are in Canada though, they are Tutoring centers) only hire teachers.
