I was extremely laid back with preschool. Some days we did nothing at all. Some days we did learning activities all day long. If he woke up one morning wanting to know something about elephants, we'd learn about elephants until he decided he'd had enough. That approach worked great for us, so I'll probably use it again with my younger son. Sure, we occasionally did workbooks and computer games, but it was always child-led. I'm much more structured now that we're doing grade-level work.
Go to my blog and click on "Little Apple's School" at the top...or somewhere near the header..I have two places for pages. lol. That will give you an idea of what we do around my house. I recommend Kumon workbooks for little ones....they are fun, colorful, and good solid material. Wait...here's the link for the section Little Apple's School on my blog.
My little one is 4. Academically she is a K level. Her work books are Horizons K math, and Explode the Code book 1. She's almost finished with HWOT preK, and is ready to move on to the K level soon. However, wiggle wise, she's not ready to do school on any type of schedule! So we break out the books when she wants to join her older sibs at the school table. We also do "school" type activities at all times of the day when she is interested. She practices writing on the chalkboard, we count everything we can think of. We identify page numbers when we read books. But aside from having the curriculum available to her, we don't schedule her with any specified tasks. It works! She's learning! And she's happy. Can't beat it! Edie
Hi, We have 3 dds, 4yo and 2.5 yo twins. We have been doing "Letter of the Week," which the girls love. Our days are somewhat structured, somewhat not. On a typical day, we have breakfast and the girls free play until snack. Then we read books, or do painting, or sing songs. We then have lunch and then go outside (weather permitting) for 1-2 hours. After that the eldest usually does workbooks. We do Kumon, Brainquest, mazes, patterns, anything to do w numbers bc dd4 is not the least bit interested in phonics or handwriting, however, having said that I recently bought her a white board w an erasible marker, which she loves and is willing to practice with that. After workbooks, it's clean up time and then t.v. time for about 1/2 hour while I get dinner ready. It's dinner time at 5 and bedtime by 6-6.30. I guess our day is pretty structured, but with our family, we need to be, otherwise I would be climbing up the walls . Katrina.
We pretty much unschooled for preK. We did ETC & Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons, when he wanted to. We played on sites like Starfall, Funschool, PBS, etc. We read books together I'd read some, then he'd read some. He wanted to do Math, so we did addition & subtraction with counters. He has his own measuring tape & ruler, and he would walk around measuring things. We watched educational shows, read a lot of books, did Art projects, etc. He was really into dinosaurs. So, we watched shows about dinos, read books, made dinos out of clay, made our own fossils, drew & colored pictures. We learned about what he wanted to learn about & used any & all resources we could find - DVDs, books, online, games, toys, field trips.
Hi everybody! I’m new to this forum. I'm homeschooling two kids, they in 3 and 4 grades. Our routine very simple, we study from 9am to noon Math science and English, than lunch, than a music teacher, PE or, history. Twice a month we have field trips. Well our day is very structured, but without discipline you can't get a good result.
