So I am sure almost everyone is having Turkey. What special side dishes or desserts do you make? I am looking for something tasty and different to prepare.
we are going to my mom's house. I'm taking: turkey, and Donald is making cranberry sauce Malcolm is making the green bean casserole Samantha makes pumpkin pie and Eva will make clover leaf rolls They all wanted to help and have a "specialty".
We'll probably do 2 Thanksgivings, but so far have only heard about one. The one we know we're doing is at my ex-stepmom's. I always bring breads (they always ask me to). This year it'll be Pumpkin bread, Banana bread, Banana Split bread, and Buttermilk Herb bread. Joslyn will probably make her deviled eggs. This year I'm also bringing cranberry cornbread stuffing & homemade cranberry sauce. I'm still trying to come up with at least one other thing. I'm considering doing Carmelized Brie or homemade Perogi, but I'm not sure & may end up going with neither.
What ever everyone else makes...lol We are taking corn to my moms.. some of the corn I slaved over to freeze. We are going to my SILs for her Turkey dinner this weekend, I'm taking homemade baked beans to hers.
We will be at my parents house for Thanksgiving. My uncle always makes the turkey and it always tastes fabulous. My dad make the giblet gravy which is the best I have ever tasted. My mom usually makes everything else which isn't a good thing. She is not a good cook. She just dumps crap together or opens a can of something. Blech! So this year I wanted to have it at my house so I could cook but that wouldnt' fly because they are so stubborn and set in their ways. So I had a brilliant idea! I called mom and said that she spends every Thanksgiving in the kitchen and this year she could relax and let me do the cooking. What I wanted to say was your cooking sucks and I want real food!!!! But I was nice:angel:. So my unlce is on turkey duty, my dad making the gravy, and I am making broccoli cheese casserole, mashed potatoes (my mom even screws that up), southern cornbread dressing (my mom opens a box of generic crap you add water too), corn, rolls, cranberry sauce, and a the pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese frosting that was posted here a while back. I am making almost everything from scratch which will be a huge improvement over any previous Thanksgiving meal. I think my mom asked my sis in law to make a dessert too. I really wanted it at my house:cry:. I plan on making a huge meal on Christmas and it will just be our little family of four but that is okay.
It's our first Thanksgiving being so far from our families, so I probably won't make a huge meal. I have a turkey, so probably that mashed potatoes, peas, and rolls. We are tring to find a place to volunteer on Thanksgiving (like a soup kitchen), but with the two little ones, I have to investigate what would work for our family- maybe a children's hospital??
A few years after i moved out, I hosted Thanksgiving for my mom & stepda, my sis & her boyfriend, my boyfriend at the time & his best friens. I did a turkey, regular mashed potatoes, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, buscuits & gravy, rolls, corn, sauteed aparagus w/garlic, cranberry sauce, perogi, pumpkin pie & cherry pie. My sis brought stuffing. The perogi & cranberry sauce were the only things I didn't make from scratch. Everything was really good & everyone enjoyed the food.
We will be doing two. One at my mils and one at my house (mines on Wed.). We have my side of the family here at my house, because unfortunatly my mother had a stroke a few years back and she cant do it. But it is okay with me. I like to do it up big. We will be having... Turkey Deer steak and gravy Chicken and Dumplins Dressing Sweet potato cassrole Deviled eggs Mashed potatos Corn on cob Squash casserole Green beans Cranberry sauce rolls Pumpkin pie Cheese cake Pumpkin role Pecan pie I think I may make fudge also. And my mother is trying to eat all veggies, no meat. So after watching the movie "Ratatouille" I am going to try to make that for her also.
I wanted to make a homemade sweet potato casserole too but half of my family likes it with mashmellows and half likes it without. I am not making two so nobody gets any!
My mom does it all and I mean it all!! You name it, she makes it and we eat it!! LOL My girls and I bake pies and take.
We have dinner with DH's family. All 17-22 of them (depending on who's weekend it is with what kids). My BIL makes the ham and my MIL makes the Turkey and everything else (we do both because we have some who won't eat bird and some who won't eat pork). She goes all out and EVERYTHING is from scratch. I bring the pumpkin pie because before I married into the family NO ONE ever made pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. I'm usually the only one who eats it, but imo, it's not Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie. Dinner: Ham Turkey Cranberry sauce Stuffing Carrot Jell-O stuff Some green fluff stuff (I have no idea what it's called or what's in it) Rolls Cornbread Mashed potatoes Green Bean Casserole Sweet potatoes (with marshmallows) Noodles in sauce Gravy Broccoli with Cheese Sauce Corn Pies: Strawberry rubarb Chocolate Pecan Apple Pumpkin Peach (times 2. sugar and sugar free) I can't remember what else. I know that last year we had 11 pies.
Mmmm making me hungry. My mom and I usually do most of the cooking. I hadnt thought of a noodle dish, but I bet that would be good. Jill
I make those!! I would just put a piece of aluminum foil in the center and only top half w/ marshmallows..
I have always had Thanksgiving. Being we lived far from home and being in the the Air Force Well we couldn't afford to go home. So we met other enlisted guys or girls and invited them into our home. Our 1st Thanksgiving my husband was in Texas and I cooked for 7 other Military men and women it was a wonderful time. Now that we are out I still cook and we seem to always invite someone or a family over. (Habits that don't stop) This year however it seems to be our 1st year with just us. (Kind of exciting, But somehow I think we'll have someone last minute) I make Turkey Stuffing Potatoes Deluxe (my grandma's recipe) Corn Pudding (my moms recipe) Green bean casserole dinner rolls cranberries Sweet Potatoes Pumpkin Pie (my son makes this) Apple Pie Cheesecake (chocolate cherry) My girls always help with everything.
We aren't military, but are considering "adopting" 2 trainees from Lackland AFB for Thanksgiving Dinner at our house. Either that or volunteering at the Alamo USO Thanskgiving Dinner. Our military families deserve so much, so we'd like to give a little back to them.
we are invited to a friends house here in texas having turkey on grill and I am bringing some kind of salad any ideas ladies could use one or two.. other then that don't know what we are having.
Let's see...we're driving to my husband's stepmother's place in MI. (his dad passed 1 1/2 ago, so this is our first visit west since she moved out of the house). It will just be us (5) with her(1). We're doing: Turkey Breast Roast Potatoes & Carrots roasted with the breast Greens of some sort (she's doing them) POSSIBLY a gluten-free stuffing if I can get one to turn out tasty. Dessert will be Pumpkin Squares (check my blog if interested, there's a link to a regular way to make them too). I tested them as gluten-free this week and they were to die for! A room full of regular folk ate them on Tuesday and begged for the recipe! LOL.
Krista I went on your blog and oh my stars your recipes look great. I think I going to make them, they do look great, thanks so much for sharing
THANKS! Cooking is my passion! Well, aside from my kids. I don't get much time for more than the daily meal, but every now and then I get to experiment. It's been pretty steady since I"m having to relearn how to cook things gluten free. If you every see something you like, and want to know how to make it normal, let me know. I usually start with a regular recipe as my base and THEN modify it to be gluten free. I was so excited about the pumpkin squares, they are a favorite dessert of mine this time of year. And have been spoiled b/c usually my MIL (well, hubby's stepmother) made them. This year, I am. And they taste soooo yummy! Okay...back to work...
