And, do you do a traditional 180 year or year-round? We're starting back on the 25th (it'll be here before I know it! ) I had planned on doing *some* school through the summer, but it didn't happen AT ALL. Oh well.
We started July 28th. We typically start the first week of August and end by Memorial Day (if not earlier)...but my girls have a Girl Scout trip next week to PA so we started a week early so we didn't start out feeling behind. We do take a summer break but do a bit of math and pleasure reading to keep up the skills.
We are following the ps here so we don't start until September 2, however I just found out that my sister who has been serving in Iraq will be home that week so we may start a few days later then planned
We are going year around now. We have to cover 180 days for state law, so we started July 14th. We will have mom led lessons for 9 weeks, then take a week off (this will be in the middle of Sept.). We will have mom led lessons for another 9 weeks which takes us up to Thanksgiving. We will have off the week of Thanksgiving until the week after New Years. It will be a nice long 6 week break, where we will focus on the joy of the season, and spend lots of time celebrating my 3 Christmas babies birthdays. After New Years we will repeat the cycle of 9 weeks on one off and another 9 weeks on. We will be done on May 15th and have about an 8 week long summer break.
We go year round here, too. We take a month off between grades, then start back up again. So, we started in June. We got about a month & half in before dd left for her vacation. She'll be back this weekend, so we'll get back to school next week.
Thanks When I was young, we lived in Reno. The schools there went year around and it was something close to that. We had off a week or 2 every so many weeks, and either 3 or 5 at Christmas time.. it's been sooo many years ago now I don't remember exactly how it was.. but I loved it, so I tried to fourm our year after it.
We'll be starting first Monday in September. We school year round, we follow a 3 month on one month off approach. Sept-Nov School Dec Break Jan-Mar School Apr Break May-Jul School Aug Break Amy
We are starting next week, August 18th. We follow pretty closely to what the public schools schedule is because my son has several neighborhood friends who are in school and he does not like having to do school when they are off or being off when they are in school. I plan for 180 days, however, if he gets ahead in stuff and finishes up early we can shave off 2 weeks. We're required to do 170-180 days. Last year we started in August and ended in June so I figure this year will be pretty much the same.
We are thinking about a year round school. The thing is we are so crazy busy in the summer, I don't see how it would work. However, both kids love the idea of getting a longer 1-2 week break between each "quarter" and I love the idea of not losing ground with a 2-3 month vacation. Because this is our first year and we just made the final decision last week to HS, and I am still trying to plan, we won't "officially" start until sometime after Labor Day.
Sommer your schedule sounds pretty cool! We will begin our new year on September 2nd. We get back from vacation on the 31st, plan to enjoy the holiday and do all our laundry from vacation on the 1st and begin bright and early on Tuesday morning. We do three twelve week terms with a week off in between each term. We also take one - two weeks off at Christmas, a week off in March and end our year in May.
We strt back on september 2nd, we do about 170 days or so.. but then even on holidays I have feild trips planned and such, through summer we do PE, and ARt classes so it all pans out to more than 190 days if I add it up!
This year we started May 12th and we won't be doing a 180 day school year simply because we don't need to. We'll go until probably Mid-February and then slow down for the summer. We'll continue language arts and math through the summer because those are too important imo to just stop for 3 months. Then we'll start back up in may again.
We're going to start on August 26th, when our little one goes back to our public school's Pre-K (special ed) program. We did a little this summer, but it was very relaxed. Joy and I are excited about getting started! Now if the rest of the curriculum would just come in so I could finish doing lesson plans....
We started back about a month and a half ago. We do cover 180 days although we do not have too. I am just used to it because we were required to when we were enrolled in a homeschool program.
It's fun to read about other people's schedules. I will have to think more about teh ones Sommer and Amy suggested, those look like they might work for us. My state doesn't require a certain number of days or hours so I am pretty wide open. I have no idea how many days we did last year for K, but this year for 1st I plan to do somewhere around 180. I tried to start up a couple weeks ago, but only did a couple days, not great days at that, and then an unplanned trip to Yellowstone to meet my sister and her family snuck up on us. It was a great trip Since we have done some school through the summer the kids didn't really know that I was trying to start the new year so yesterday we did an official first day of school and started over, we did pictures and stuff to try to make it special.
I like the look of Amy's, really it's close to what I figured out. Here our year, according to the state laws, runs from July 1st to June 31st and we have to have our eval and turn in our portfolio by June 31st... so it wouldn't work for us.. well really it could, but it would take some work figureing out what to include in this years portfolio and next years if that makes sense.
Yellowstone is about three hours from us so we have been up there several times this summer. We have a PLANNED field trip there next weekend. During that trip ds7 will be working on his junior ranger badge It's funny, even though my kids have never been in a traditional school I still have to remind myself that "school" doesn't have to be a sit down and do bookwork experience.
