My son will be in 7th grade next year and wants to take Astronomy for science. He's age-wise going into 7th, but is behind in some subjects so is actually a 6th/7th grader. I used Apologia Anatomy this year for my kids. I loved the program, and so did they. My plan was to use General Science for my son, but he really wants to take Astronomy. Is the Astronomy book going to be too easy? He said, "I want to REALLY learn about the stars, not just 'here's our solar system' and 'here's what a star does'," so he really wants to get in depth. What other programs are out there where he can really dig into Astronomy, if you think Apologia might be too easy? Thanks!
I say go for it. The elementary books are basic but not lacking. They always have other resources listed on their website if he wants to go more in depth about something specific. Have him choose a topic from each lesson to do a report on. If he is a little behind, he will probably do better in General Science his "8th grade" year anyway! Then he will be able to do physical science in 9th grade.
I used it several years ago and will be using it again as part of MFW next year. I think your DS will be fine. We do General Science for 8th grade, too.
Apologia is great! There are optional notebooking guides as well, and those contain extra reading/research for older kids. You can also get additional information online using the link given in the front of the textbook. I LOVE the astronomy book! We'll be using it again in Spring 2014. I think it's my favorite of the whole elementary series.
I'm sure other sites have this option, but I know for a fact that Timberdoodle has sample pages from the text and the journals.
Thank you all for your advice! I think we are going to use Apologia. It's the best of what I've seen and I'm comfortable with it, and I appreciate you all giving your advice too!
