I ended up in Genesis 4 and 5 today for my Bible reading. I tend to skip genealogies, but felt inclined inclined to read through them this morning. Now I'm totally cornfuzzled. I think I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what.

In 4:17 it starts the line of Cain, which includes Enoch and eventually Lamech.

In chapter 5, God gives us the line of Noah, which began Adam through Seth. According to this account, Enoch and Lamech were descendants of Seth. Now, is this a simple case of using the same names? Or am I missing something more complicated? Or am I just trying to make this more complicated? HELP!!!!!!!!

(see, this is why I usually skip the genealogies *sigh*)

Yes, Enosh was Seth's son, but ENOCH was his great great great grandson (something like that). Read on into verses 18-24 (v24 is where God takes Enoch into Heaven without Enoch dying).

I think it's just that different people had the same name.
Cain had a son and named him Enoch, this Enochs great-great grandson was named Lamech.
Seth's (Cain's brother) great-great-great grandson was also named Enoch. This was the Enoch that God took. Enoch's grandson was also named Lamech and he was Noah's father.
I've wonered about this myself, a lot of the names are very similiar. But I do think they are different people. I didn't add up the years in the men of Seth's lineage, but I'm thinking if you did it wouldn't mesh with Cain's lineage. I think the people with the same names would have been alive at different times or at least the one's from Cains side of the family would have been extremely old (even from a biblical standpoint) when the ones on Seth's side were born.
But again that's just what I think.

Lisa is correct. There are two Enoch's. The first is the son of Cain, father of Irad (Ge. 4:17,18). Cain named the first city in mentioned in the Bible after him (Ge. 4:17). There is also Enoch the son born to Jared the seventh man in the genealogical line from Adam. This was the prophet that kept walking with God and lived to 365 years old when God did not let opposes kill him but was instead “transferred so as not to see death." (Ge. 5:18, 21-24)
