The lady behind me was talking about the treacher of the year. Saying how wonderful she was and stuff. No biggie could care a less. I didn't know the teacher and she wasn't from my town. She said that three of her children had her and she does great. (third grade teacher) She said that her last daughter was so behind in her reading/english because no one helped her until she was in the third grade. I almost wanted to say, where were you when you daughter needed help. Isn't that was a parent suppose to do? Instead I told her that she needed to learn patience because she kept making snide comments about my two cart order and the fact that I was using WIC. She had under 20 items she could have gone to an express lane.
The Jackson Sun!!! I went to college in Jackson and lived there for 10 years. I consider it my home. I was actually in town this weekend and wanted to go to that book sale, but didn't make it.
Why was it this lady's business what you were buying or how many cartfuls you had??? Or how you were paying?? I hope you had plenty of goodies in those carts- that would give her even more to talk about. Some people! When you were all rung up you should have acted like you forgot something and asked the cashier 'Do you sell beer here?' Lol.
It didn't help that I used both cash and then my debit card First I had to find it cuz it fell into THE BAG(my library/purse and diaper bag in one). Then the last two orders were WIC. Some people still think WIC is like welfare and it isn't.
I hope that the teacher of the year there is not like some here in Florida!! Also, the snide remarks and attitude that goes alone, is another reason to homeschool. Her kids will not refrain if she does not, and they are doing the same kind of thing in their local PS. I used WIC during my first pregnancy. I was a gestational diabetic and seeing the nutitionist through insurance would have been 40 dollars a visit. I was told that I could do the WIC thing and see WIC Nutitionists at no cost. We had paid our taxes all our working lives so why not. If the social programmers are going to take our tax money and decide how to give it back in the form of social services, why not get it back when we can. What I am not using up in school costs, at the federal and state level in terms of tax dollars is far greater than the few boxes of cereal and cans of tuna I used those months that is for sure.
Lots of our younger foster children got WIC and I noticed how people acted when they saw me use it. I never paid any attention because I knew they were just ignorant of the WIC program. I know it bothers some people to see someone use food stamps or WIC. I am just thankful that so far we haven't needed any help feeding our family. But for the grace of God that could be any of us. I use the WIC program. But I have also recieved looks from people who act like I'm stealing from them. It's frustrating, but I kinda figure that I have to pay taxes to thier kids can go to public school, so it evens out!
Amen!! I used wic with my children, and my mother felt like she was being payed back for all the taxes she payed for things she or her family never used. I don`t use it now, but if I did I really would be paying for it with the school taxes I pay and we HOME SCHOOL!!
I used WIC with my son as well. and right now we are getting food stamps, you know we all pay taxes and we need the help right now. I am not proud of it but its the way it is. I hate to say it but people like that can kiss my ###. sorry ladies It just makes me mad when people choose to judge others.
I've used WIC with all my kids. It helped a lot especially since all 3 had to be on special formula. I've also had food stamps when I was a single mom of 1. I worked hard but it still wasn't enough to cover our bills. In our state they changed food stamps, it is no longer the paper ones they issue a ard like a credit card for food stamps and benefits. You have a pin number and in reality no one knows you are using food stamps except the cashier. Makes it easier for people. I know when i was a kid I hated going to the store because my mom would get so flustered when it was time to pay for groceries. It was embarasing to say the least. The cashier had to lay the food stamps all out and stamp them with aq special stamp. I don't use either now but why judge someone for using them if they are needed.
the nerve of people now days. But, I got to the point that you got to do what you got to do to help your family and if they don't like it oh well. My dh had a aunt who lived to be almost 102 and her saying was one I will always carry along with me. If you don't like what I am doing, don't look. If you can do better then do it. If you want to help me fine, be my guest. what she meet by that is cleaning, cooking and buying the food. I thought it was funny. She told me she has told a couple of people that before and no one ever stood up to help her.
I like what your aunt had to say, Kris! Makes a lot of sense too! We used food stamps when I was little. That's just where we were at that point in our lives. I was naive about the looks and comments, mostly, but I didn't let it bother me when I noticed something negative. In fact, it made me curious as to why?! Some of those people were so arrogant! They had money, and some of them had lots of it, so why didn't they use it to help people, instead of buying more "things"?! It really bothered my sister a LOT though, and she's had a "grudge" or problems with esteem because of it. My parents were not judgemental, we had people of all colors, creeds, nationalities, etc. over to stay, play games, sing, whatever. We grew up that way, so now, that's the way I'm teaching our kids. Do what you can do, thank God for what you have, be kind to everyone (but don't let them take advantage of that!), and never look down on people, or feel you're better than them. Instead help those that are worse off than you, because as someone said, any of us at any time could end up in the same situation!
I tried to get WIC or food stamps twice but never qualified. I did qualify for Meidcaid though which helped pay for my doctor's visit and hospital stay when both my children were born. As broke as we were at one point they still told me we made too much money! Never understood that.
TIffany, been there many times, I don't understand how some people get it. My dh was told he made 5 dollars more then he should one time. Other people we knew were on it and got all the stuff, must of lied the only thing I can think of.
These are the current income levels based on number in household for WIC. People would be really surprised how many actually qualify for WIC. We used it for two of our children. It is a great program and people shouldn't be ashamed of it. http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/howtoapply/incomeguidelines.htm
I used wic when Madison was born till age 5, it was a great help. We also receive foodstamps. I work 3 days a week.
