    Women Only Please!

After being on 'the pill' for fifteen years, I am going off of it. I have been thinking about this for a couple of years. What I need to do, is find out about 'natural birth control' - how to, what to, etc. If any of you can help me with this, please do! Thank you!

I think it's referred to as natural family planning. My dh and I pretty much used this method after we had been married 10 months. I used the pill until then, but decided that I didn't like the idea of the hormones and other things about the pill that I found out later. We did have a surprise with #4, but I have to say, I am really not regular enough to use this method effectively! If you use NFP, you will lose the spontenaity allowed with other methods.

Basically, there are 3 days when you are most likely to get pg--the day before, the day of, and the day after ovulation (because sp*rm can live for up to 3 days, eggs for 48 hrs). You take the 1st day of your next period and count back 14 days. That is the day of expected ovulation. Use that date as your guide. This is how my dr. explained the ovulation cycle to me. Hope this helps!

I can't help you with the natural why but I just wanted to say I went off about 9 years ago and my hubby took care of it. He said it wasn't too bad.
But what I really want to say was that I feel the best I have every felt not being on anything. My cycle is normal. I still pms but not as bad.

I agree with that. I actually had a tubal after my son was born and never worried about BC Protection since.

I tried hormonal birth control (pills) breifly when we were first married 22 years ago. It did not work for me, I was back off in less than 2 months.

We were married for about 15 years before our first pregnancy. Not sure what changed after all that time. We for the most part did not practice birth control and still did not get pregnant.

Anyway, I remember something funny that a biology prof. I had in jr. college said once. We were discussing hormonal birth control in a small class, as part of learning the human reproductive cycle and what hormones do what when. A students then started asking about other methods. The concept of rythm came up. Many confuse this term with withdrawal and the prof. cleared that up. He then stated that people that practice both or either method(s) are defined by the same biological term. Students were then attentive and waiting when he said after a long pause...........

    .......Parent.

I still get a chuckle out of this for some reason.

Heehee... When I went for my post-natal check-up with my 3rd, my dr. said "I suppose you'll be taking care of the birth control yourself." I said, "yes". And he said, "OK. I'll see you in a couple of years." He was right! But, I few children as our greatest blessing from God and therefore gladly received all that he gave me. (Although I was a little shocked with the last one!) Now that I have a 3yo and no baby, I have that itch ...

Do we ever lose "the itch"?! LOL! To some degree I have since the gb came along! I'm only 43 but I sure don't have the energy I had back when! My first two were 13 months apart and I went on the pill after the second. Things were okay for awhile and one day I mentioned to my mom that my legs were aching really badly and she recommended I get off the pill IMMEDIATELY as she was concerned about phlebitis. I never went on anything after that and the third was 2 1/2 years after the 2nd. Joyce was my "after 2 miscarriages resulting in the loss of 3 babies, back to school since there won't be anymore" child. I was in my first semester at the local tech school when I got pregnant with her. I wouldn't trade her for the world but I laugh if she had been my first I probably would have stopped then!

Btw, my baby sis was a vasectomy baby, and that did not sit well with my dad. My mom is a good Christian woman but he still was upset when #5 came along AFTER the operation. They say there is only one form of bc that is 100%!

My husband is "taken care of" also. Before he started the operation the dr. asked, "Are you absolutely 100% sure you don't want any more children?" DH said yes, and the dr. said, "Well, I hope so, because I've been doing this for 17 years. I do a VERY thorough job, and you WON'T have any more children when I am done! Noone ever has!" And we haven't! :)

I get that itch less and less now. But I DO like borrowing other people's babies now and then!

Handsome was cut, tied, and burned when he had his vasectomy. He asked the doctor if it would come undone because he has heard stories about his before. The doctor said this is why they cut, tie, and burn what ever it is they cut,so the chances of sperm finding it's way through is almost impossible.
    So far, so good!!:D

How did you get your husbands to get a vasectomy? (sp?) We don't want to have any more children (unless we would adopt). I have asked him if he would consider it, and he's like no way! I have gone off of the pill because of various side effects that I no longer want to live with. I feel like his getting 'fixed' would be a lot less invasive than me getting 'fixed.' We're kind of at a stand-still at the moment. :( I am trying to learn all I can about NFP and plan on that for the time being. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Really the first thing I would do, especially after being on the pill for 15 years is go to your OB and get a hormonal level check done. Your cycles may only be normal because you are on the pill, however naturally they may be off.
My cycles are so goofy, that my LMP was 25 November. I am not pregnant, I know this for 2 reasons. 1. I had a tubal. Although this is not 100% there is reason two. 2. DH and I have not done anything since mid October, because DH had surgery and since than the pain meds has made his drive non-existent. I had a cycle in October and another in November. Nothing since.
I am so not regular so NFP so would not work for me.

My OB told me November 2005, when I became concerned about a possible tubal pregnancy because I was close to 3 months late and cramping, that women in ther mid to late 30's do start slowing down. Where you used to have a cycle every 28 days, 13 times a year, you may now have a cycle 9-10 times a year.

So getting a hormonal check to make sure where you are at for sure may be the way to start.

My dh had a vasectomy, too. (Although we regret it now :(). I really didn't have to persuade him though. It was really more his decision than mine. I was pregnant and hormonal and said, "I don't want to do this again," so he made the appt. The dr. did question him because of his age, but when he found out we were expecting #4, decided it was fine. My dh said it really wasn't too bad, more embarrassing than painful. You might not want to tell your hubby that! :) I just said, "Do you know how many times MY feet have been in stirrups?!".

Yours and mine both!!! Sounds exactly like mine's reaction, and I DID say it was less invasive for him than for me. Didn't make any difference.
