I am so excited! Dh and I grew up in the same town, and my parents and sister and his sister still live there. Dh's parents live about 45 minutes away now. This is the town where I worked and we lived until we moved to Omaha a little over 5 years ago. Up until now, we have kind of planned on moving back to that area when we are done with the military (summer of 2009) and buying some land a town or two away and building an "indefinite" house. Dh has gone out with my dad a few times and looked at land and has never seen anything he was really interested in. Last night dh and I were up (too) late talking with my parents and my dad mentioned 5 acres and a house (that, strangely enough my uncle built--no one ever told me he built houses! How did I miss that??) for sale in our hometown. So today we drove by on our way out of town and peeked in the windows and looked at the land a little. The house would be a MAJOR step down for us (which is hard, considering how little our house is now!), but we would have a place to live in while we saved and built our indefinite house, so surely we could deal with it for a limited time. Dh talked to the realtor and my dad and dh and my dad feel the price is a little high, so we may see if they will come down and maybe make an offer. I am pretty sure this is insane that we are talking about purchasing a home we do not like and have only peeked in the front windows. And there was a snake, which freaked me out. Anyway, please pray that we have some clarity on this. We are not sure if this is really what we should do, or if we are just so excited that we could get that much land in town. And, even if we decide not to get this land, it was nice that it came about, because now we are pretty sure that when dh is out of the military we are going to stay put for a couple more years while he does his job as a civilian and goes back to school. Which means that I feel better about putting out the effort to try to find a homeschool group here. Sorry that got so wordy! I am just excited!!!!
I hope it all goes well Jen, your right its a scary time but if its meant to be then it will happen. What type of civillian job will your dh have? GL!!!
Good luck on the house. It sounds like you have a lot to plan and look forward to. That is so exciting. Beth
He is a doctor. Right now he is in payback for medical school. It would be nice to do the job as a civilian because he would make more money but have less work because he wouldn't have to do all of the extra military stuff. So we'll see. I think what's so scary is that we finally have a say in what we'll be doing. He was commissioned when we were in college, already in med school when we got married, and since then we have just had to do whatever the military said. So after 9 years of marriage we will be on our own!
Wow Jen, how neat that the time is coming when you're on your own! After he's out what's he going to do? Once he get's a more permanent job, it'll be great to be able to save, then build that house you want! I think it's wise to look into this property, because when you DO want to move back, nothing like that may be available! Best wishes!
He is not exactly sure what he wants to do, but it will probably be something in health care. He wants to go back and get his MBA so that he would have the opportunity to do something in administration down the road. The original plan was to work on that at this time, but since they change deployment stuff so frequently, that has not panned out.
I hope it all works out for you all. I know you all have to be excited and it will neat to get out on your own again...
Well, we went and looked inside the house this weekend and we really feel it is not what we want. It is nice enough that it would be a pain to tear down later, but still needs enough work to make it costly. We spent several hours driving around looking at land Saturday and Sunday and found some prospects. It is kind of discouraging because you can tell by the prices that a lot of land owners are hoping developers will be buying. But hopefully we will find something for not TOO much. I think it just seems like such a big leap because we just bought our first house 2 years ago and it is very small and now we are looking at buying the land and building the house we plan on staying in for good. Yikes! Anyway, when we go back home in a couple of weeks we are going to go road by road through the section we like the best and try to see EVERYTHING that is available.
