    writing and grammar for wigglers!

Okay, so I have to thank Cathy Duffy for this one! But I wanted to spread the word.

I'm HSing a DS7...In fact, today is the last day of first grade! We are ready for a break!

He's a very sensitive, social little boy--my gentle giant. Anyway, we just got the Create a Story game...and all the bells and whistles...My son is OVER THE MOON. Even though he's not old enough to write a long story...He is REALLY getting into the parts of the story, filling out the outline, and putting the story segments into sequence! We played it with some older kids from the local HS group...it was EXCELLENT on many different levels. There is also a grammar game and workbooks...I haven't explored those yet.

When did you start a more formal curriculum? When do you need more than writing practice, reading, and some grammar games?

And have any of you used Writing Strands with wigglers?

Can't wait to hear your input!

    Stacie:)

I've thought a million times about getting that game....nice to hear a raving review!!

I have Writing Strands and just couldn't get into it myself as the teacher (wish I had realized it before I bought level 2, 3 and the eval book. We just started IEW with my two older girls (8 and 10 yr old). My son is just starting 1st grade (when we end our summer break). I don't think he's ready for formal stuff yet but plan to use IEW methods with him when he's ready. It is pricier than WS but with 3 kids...I'll get my $$ worth. Andrew Pudewa is very entertaining and gives classes at conventions, etc about Teaching Boys and other kids who just want to build forts all day. Listening to this class on MP3 from our state convention, got my attention. I think when the time is right, my son will like watching the student DVDs with Andrew. He's just funny enough to keep his attention. I don't know if they have any samples on their website www.excellenceinwriting.com. WS is lots cheaper and LOTS of folks use it successfully. It just wasn't a good fit for us.

The MP3 clip I have is just audio and on a CD (only available to listen to not to e-mail). I bought it thru www.heav.org from last year's conference. I know that you could buy some seminars as singles...not sure about Andrew's. I got the entire conference because I couldn't attend.

We're closing out our first full year too. Technically we've done 1 1/4 school years......yippee!!
