Hello, dd is 7 in 2nd grade and she still is writing some of her letters backwards. It's not all the time and it's not always the same letters. At what age do you start to show concern? Thanks, Tandy
At what age do you start to show concern? Thanks, Tandy[/QUOTE] Hey Tandy.. It is very normal, and along 3rd grade is where you start expecting a little more. Second graders just now have down their penmanship, so they are still pretty new writers. By third grade there is a lot more writing and hence practice makes perfect, well sometimes.. :0) My two oldest did this, but I alleviate the problem by teaching them cursive in first grade, the letter like *b* and *d* could never be more opposite in cursive ..It does help and cut down on letter reversals... HTH
all my kids did the "b" and "d" so I taught them this: When you say /b/, your mouth closes like a line. B says /b/, it starts with the line. When you say /d/, your mouth opens like a ball. D sayd /d/d, it starts with the ball. Also, if you make circles with each hand and leave your pointing finger extended, the left hand makes a B and the right hand makes a D. B comes before D and we read from left to right. My kids wrote lots of things backwards... S, P, E, and the numbers 3, 4, and 6. I wouldn't worry till close to the end of the third grade as long as your child is reading well. Carrie
Carrie, I told my middle child about the hands with B and D. These were the only two she ever reversed, and I thought that it was such a simple "remedy" and she'd love it. NOPE!!! She's in too big a hurry to take the time to make it with her hands! Sigh..... She also has lots of spelling issues, I think because her mind speeds on ahead of her hand when she's writing.
Jackie, My dd has the same problem her little mind is so far ahead of her hand writing. I been working on her to slow down but no luck yet.
I understand that one!!! My oldest son is so intellectual. Very articulate, and interested in scientific things that baffle me but his handwriting is atrocious!!! He can finally spell much better than he did, but we are still working on intensive remedial handwriting. For spelling that is easy, check out www.writing-edu.com/spelling . I love it. It is child directed, mastery driven, and requires no teacher prep or lesson time. And my son is proof that it works. I have three children using this program. Carrie
