My 13yo DS doesn't like writing, sentences and papers, not handwriting. We tried Writing Strands this year, but it didn't help in the lest and was liking pulling teeth to get him to do it and then he put little effort into it. So I am looking for something new. Has any one used The Write Stuffby Dean Rea and if so did you like it? Or do you have any other suggestions on how to help him learn to write sentences, paragraphs, and papers?
There is a great series for elementary school students, but you might find it useful if he struggles with the basics. It is called Writing Styles and they are just little workbook type units on different forms of writing. http://rainbowresource.com/search.php?sid=1294975753-1324178 If he really needs help, try the Institute for Excellence in Writing series. Pricey, but they work: http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/catalog There are samples of the lessons for both so you can try and see what works. Otherwise, you might try to enroll him in a co-op type class for additional writing opportunities and assistance.
my ds is more into typing now than writing too. He will write out whole dialogs etc for games he creates but forget writing in his notebook. I am working to get him doing this more, and he found a good time for him to write a story is at night when he is supposed to sleep but can't fall asleep. I decided its better than a game! I have not used Write stuff but have heard great things about it. We have WS as well and this year he does not seem interested in it.
Typing is definitely an option. With the way the world is heading into more and more tech. Handwriting is becoming a lost art form. If you really want him to get it. Try something new.
We are using the Institute for Excellence in Writing and it is really helping my girls. I will admit though that it is very expensive. We only have it because my father used it with his class and gave it to me when he retired.
See if you can encourage him to write down his thoughts, ideas or stories, something that he has freedom and control over. Maybe he could write review of something else he's into, like any video games, sport or other hobby. Just a few ideas anyway.
