I've recently decided, through some research on classical education method and looking at our own... ways of doing things, that I'd like to start to follow the way history is done in The Well-Trained Mind.

The problem has been that we're already in third grade with my oldest. That, and I still want to study Texas history when we finish our current "history" book. (The current book is really more of a social studies thing, covering map skills, landforms, climate, etc etc and then generally going over "the way things are" in the world, the country, and then the state. Very condensed format.)

The way it's set up in WTM, for those that don't know, is to cover the same 4 time periods 3 times within school. First, the Ancient world. Then, the Middle Ages. Next, the Renessaince period. Lastly, the Modern world. The youngers cover it in grades 1-4 for facts, then again in 5-8 for better understanding and linking, and again in 9-12 for solidification and drawing conclusions etc.

The problem has been that we're starting halfway through the third grade. I finally found a set that shows how to cover this period in SIX years!! YAY! So we'll cover it from third through eighth grade, and then again in a more condensed version in 9-12. YAY!!

here's the site if you care:

Thank you for sharing that! We have also decided to start following history like The Well-Trained Mind and this will be our first year. Our boys will be in 5th, 4th, and 1st so we are going to start everyone on the ancients together. We are planning on starting this summer with our history so we can get into the swing of things before adding the rest of our curriculum.

Thanks for sharing. I will have to take some time and look through that site!

By the way, Magic- I was reading very quickly and thought you were starting with history before adding the rest of your "children"--- lol. Made me stop and read the post a couple of times!!

Yes it's a great site. I think it was shared with me by someone else here... maybe Nellie? anyway I keep coming back to it, so finally I marked it in my faves after finding this. LOL LOTS there and I find something else every time I go to it. (It comes up on my google searches for almost everything I do!)

Glad you all can use it as well! :)

hehehe Nellie, I keep going back to almost ALL of the sites you sent me the other day. Thanks so much for that! And now, with the types of learning styles thread going on, I'm getting more and more excited all the time! Our first year was good, but this second year will be AWESOME! Thanks so much for your help!
