    Hello there,
I just got my first issue of weekly reader for our school year, it's a little early but I'll probably hold it back until we start on the 18th. Have any of you checked them out? My son was getting them in public school in kindergarten and this year I decided to get them. They are so cool and have so many great topics. (and no, i'm not affiliated in anyway).
I'm just so tickled...the school year is getting so close. I have been down about not getting moved and having all of my school stuff packed in June and now it's almost the start of school and we've not moved yet!
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to drag it back out next week.
Just wanted to share my excitement! :D

My kids liked them in their Dept of Defense school. I never really thought about getting them for our homeschool. We do get Kids Discover though. My oldest had it in their DoD school and we kept the subscription going.

They are geared more towards public schools...for example, it talks about raising your hand b4 you speak and 'school rules' but I circumvent that by explaining what it means in our lil school. :)
Weekly reader sends out a little mini-magazine.. they're not very large but you get one a week (per kid or they can share one). They at the grade reading level and cover topics like science or monthly themes.
I honestly had forgot about ordering them because I did it back in May or April. So I was surprised to get it but tickled anyway.
They have a series this year that I just bought about the election on grade level....k-1, 2-3, 4-6 etc. that explains and walks them through everything on their level.

They're great and you can order back issues if you want a particular subject. I haven't done that we just read what comes in the mail at this point (and keep them for future reference.)

We love education magazines. The girls get cobblestone for history, Odessey for science and ranger rick. I need to add one for dd3, maybe my big back yard or something like that.

What does odessey look like? I was looking at Ranger Rick, it looks interesting. We currently get highlights, zootles (a young version of zoobooks from the same publishers...probably our last year getting it, it's more preschool) and boys life.

Ranger Rick is a lot like My Big Back Yard except it is for older children but not teens. They are all about nature and caring for our world. Each issue has a few projects and great stories about different animals throughout the world. Ems loves it but she is a HUGE animal fan. They also have puzzles and some craft ideas too. Once, one of the main animals was a zebra. There was a cool project we made out of black and white beans. We had to draw a zebra on poster board and fill it in with beans. For the hair and hooves, we used sesame seeds. It looked so cool! Although it was a bit heavy.

Odyssey is geared more towards higher elementary 9-10 yrs old I think. They have a teachers guide online to go with each issue. My girls love the pictures and it opens up some great discussion. You can take a closer look here: www.odysseymagazine.com

Weekly Reader can be for homeschoolers, too. We got it last year, and we'll get it this year. I like the posters they send.

You ladies are always so helpful even when you are not trying. I have been thinking about getting ds something like that. I will have to go back and see if there is anything in his age range ( he is 4 but is learning to read) Somebody gave him comics, like the jetsons etc. Although he can't read them he just loves to sit and look at them. I thought he would like something like that for a christmas gift.

    Thanks
