I seem to always be the last one to know. At least that is how I feel about beauty issues. As I get older, there are more. LOL Example: facial hair. This was never a large issue. At approaching 50 I just now need to pluck a couple if brow hairs to keep what I consider nice brows. Chin hair is another thing, this past couple of years, I have had a lot more. Always just took care of it with tweezers. More plentiful now and some are white and this is getting harder to do with tweezers. Waxing is not an option. My skin sheers off leaving the hairs behind. Ouch. And I am too much of a germ freak to go to salons for this anyway. Fortunately I discovered hair removal springs. Perfect solution for me and you don't have to look to use one. Why didn't someone tell me about this years ago. For a couple of dollars postage included from Amazon.com and I am happy to have a good for me solution. I just figured out today that people use flat brushes filled with acetone to tidy up French manicures etc. And to think that I would try to get the perfect line and then remove all the stuff and try again when I missed. I am a hopelessly low information lady when it comes to this stuff. Am I a mutant, am I alone in this? Are there secret meetings held somewhere in a back alley. Do people discuss this stuff at bars? Is this what Oprah was about?
You are too funny! I too am always out of the beauty loop. I never know what people are talking about! Makeup is beyond me and my hair stays in a ponytail wayyyy too often for most people. That being said, I manage to look presentable most of the time!
The last time I wore make-up was on my wedding day. HONESTLY!!! And poor Rachael! She learned that her mom was totally HOPELESS in doing hair about a half-hour before a guy came to take her to his formal Homecoming Dance. Her first "date" (even though "Mom, it's not REALLY a date; I insisted on paying for half!"). He came in with his dad (who was driving), and she's upstairs IN TEARS! When she finally came down, she was all smiles and he never guessed there had been a crisis just before!
"Beauty" has never been my thing. I have managed to keep a decent haircut, but my lady has retired, I've never once had a manicure or pedicure. Just a few years ago, I started using "face soap" for my face instead of the same soap I use for my body. I'm not into lotions and potions at all. The hair of my chinny-chin-chin is white (most of it), so I have to sit by a window so they'll show in the light and I can grab most of them with the tweezers, using a magnifying mirror. I've always been told that if you pluck a hair long enough it'll quit growing. Yeah, right. Funny how the less hair I have on my arms and legs -- and head! -- the more grows on my chin and mustache,,, As far as the eyebrows, the ones I used to pluck out have quit growing, for the most part, so the shape is ok, but now they're growing so long they wave at me and I'm thinking of gluing them down with hair gel or something... :/
I swear I'm missing the girl gene. I don't normally wear make up, I don't get excited over shoes or the latest clothing. Give me a pair of crocs, jeans and a t-shirt and I'm good.
I know what to do with makeup, I just rarely do it. My daughter watches youTube videos on how to do stuff, and is way more savvy that I ever was, or ever will be. And she's only 14. Oy! I go to get my brows waxed MAYBE twice a year. I treat myself to a real manicure/pedicure twice a year - once for our annual gymnastics team banquet in June, and once at Christmas (well, don't do the pedi at Christmas b/c no one will see my feet!!!!). Last time i had my brows waxed, I had her do the lip too. Sigh. Aging is not a pretty event. I used to dye my hair, but sick of skunk stripe, so I stopped doing it. I went gray. And I am VERY gray. Oh well. My husband thinks I'm beautiful, and that's all that really matters. Right?
Krista, you are so right! Freddy loved me before I lost weight and still does, and I loved him before his hair turned gray and turned loose!
I also go sans makeup. Just cannot stand the feeling of it on my face. I also have sensitive skin and almost anything can make be break out. I also use just soap for the most part. Ivory. I started using a face cream a few years back. It is very inexpensive and does not make me break out so until they "new and improve -assize" it, I will keep it. It comes in a little purplish container. I have mixed skin on my face and the dry areas need a little help in my middle age. If any of you spend a lot of time on chin hair, consider the spring. I am glad I did. They are cheap, easy to sanitize and you are in control as it is manual. I sometimes worry that I am putting my DD's at a deficit in that they are not getting the best education on makeup and this sort of thing. My Dh and I decided to let them have a teen magazine subscription to let them have some additional exposure. We have good talks on stuff as a result of what is in it. We talk about commercialized and secular values versus Biblical values across many topics that appear in it.
Although I wear makeup everyday I don't wear much. A light powder for my oily T-zone and mascara and chapstick. If I am going out ( meaning more than the grocery store or to run errands) I will put some blush, eye makeup, and lip gloss on. I wear my hair in a ponytail most of the time, but will wear it down if the occasion calls for it. I don't use special creams or lotions for my face. I use a shampoo bar my aunt makes to wash my hair. I don't like the shampoos sold in the store, the are way to chemical smelling for me.
My husband was the one who told me to stop dying my hair. I love when I feel like I look my worst, he hugs me and says something about how he can't believe he got a beautiful woman like me. Guess it helps that his eyesight is going! HA HA HA!!!!
I've actually seen quite the opposite with my daughters. My oldest, although she would LOVE for us to let her wear eyeliner (we allow eyeshadow, but not liner), she tends to go for a more natural look. She and I had excellent talks when she first started to want to wear makeup. Told her the purpose of make up was to enhance what you already have, not cover it up. We started by letting her wear just lip gloss (12); then at 13 she was allowed mascara (no eye shadow) and lip gloss; now that she's 14 she can do all but eyeliner. She chooses very neutral colors unless she's getting dressed up for a party or something really, really special. She looks very natural, and very beautiful. I'm very impressed with how well she's handled it. I think not making a fuss over it, or not being overly consumed with our outward appearance helps them to know it's okay not to worry too much. I'm most worried about my youngest….she's definitely more "sparkly" if you know what I mean. She's the one who already wants to wear lots of makeup. We let her wear lipgloss on VERY special occasions. But that's it!!!! LOL Girls are so funny.
I'm completely into beauty (especially hair), but my problem is that I'm a few decades behind! LOL I usually have victory rolls in my hair with a big flower to accessorize! I'm never without a flower in my hair! I pair my victory rolls with a back bun, pony tail, hair down loose, bobby pinned up, and with a bandana if I'm getting nitty gritty into cleaning! I DID however have to start dying my hair because at the ripe old age of 26 I got my first gray hair. I was devastated! I called my Mum at work and told her to book me into a nursing home b/c the time had come! LOL I'm almost 27 and I dye my hair (as close to my natural brunette as possible) every 6-8 months. As far as make-up goes, I'm more conservative. I do very natural and minimal: powder foundation, light blush, mascara, lipstick and done. However, my lipstick is usually a bright red! I love bright red lipstick! So fun! While I was in the store one day I got a comment about my hair being horrifically out of style (I can't believe perfect strangers feel comfy giving other complete strangers fashion advice...) and I thought about it awhile. This was when I was brave enough to fix my hair up like that rarely. Why should I care what others think of me? My God loves me, my husband loves me, and *I* should love me too! It just so happens that *I* love me with victory rolls, large flowers, and bright red lipstick! Coincidently, my husband thinks it's sexy/beautiful as well! Even better, is that's how my creator MADE me! We're ALL beautiful, ladies! God loves us the way he made us, our Husbands love us for the way God made us (or else they wouldn't be married to us), so WE should love US for US!! You're ALL Beautiful, Ladies!!
I have always worn my hair long. I can remember being accosted by strangers (older women) in stores, on the sidewalk and at church, starting when I was about 12. They would be very rude and say things like: You'll have to cut that long hair soon. Don't plan on wearing that long stringy hair your whole life. You will need to grow up soon and cut that hair. You will look like an old witch with that hair when you are older. THe witch comments were the most common. I at some point started replying with "better than being a short haired witch like you" " or I might look like witch when I am old, but being rude is a choice"
My mom felt I was "too old" to have long hair; I ignored her!!! Vantage, a good number of years back, Rachael was doing AWANA quizzing at the middle school level. I was in the ladies' bathroom at the church, brushing my very long hair. One of the quiz team advisors walked in, looked at me, and said, "Your hair is very pretty grey!" and stroked it. Then she jerked her hand back and asked, "I'm sorry; may I touch your hair?" This is a TOTAL STRANGER, now (with a foreign accent to boot!!!) Turns out, she was trying to decide whether or not to color her hair. Was it being vain? Would that money be better spent elsewhere? Why did I chose not to color MY hair? (Because I'm too cheap, lol!) Well, a few years down the road, I went to another AWANA quizzing event that Phillip was in. And that lady was there. I recognized her as the strange lady who touched my hair; Rachael recognized her as one of the ladies from the co-op we had just started attending. It never occurred to me when I saw her at co-op she was "that" lady! I've gotten to know her better over the years (she's actually from Portugal), but I will never forget how we originally met!
What a great story, Jackie!! Too funny! I would sorta freak out if a stranger was stroking my hair in a bathroom! Ha! YES, Kbabe! That is a great tutorial for the victory rolls I use! I also follow CHerry Dollface on youtube. SHe has great pin-up makeup tutes and hair tutes! Love it! Vantage, that's terrible!!!! I can't imagine condemning someone for their hair or anything else at any age! So hurtful!
I just learned that a 2 tone hair is called hombre'......... Eva got her hair partially colored purple on the bottoms..... and it really looks good.
Faythe is going to the co-op dance this Saturday. We have a lovely neighbor who has always done her hair and make-up, but she's had some serious health issues, and I told Faythe not to ask her this time. So she talked with one of the young adults that help with the Senior High girls at Youth Group, and this girl is coming over to help Faythe. I sure couldn't have done it!
