Do you remember, when you were young, hearing all those stories from gandparents & parents about life when they were young? You know, the "When I was your age, I had to walk 20 miles to school uphill both ways, in a skirt, no shoes, in 6 feet of snow" stories. Well, I got an email from my sister that was kind of like that. It was a rant about how easy the 'under 30 crowd' has it. It mentioned things like having the old Atari instead of the new Playstations with 3D & cool graphics, no internet, having to look up books in the card catalog, cable with less than 100 channels, TVs without remotes, no call waiting or caller IDs, and having to wait for Saturday morning for cartoons. I am in the 'under 30 crowd', but I still remember at least most of that (I'm pretty sure we never owned an Atari). It got my dh & I talking about all those things we remember from childhood that are different now. I thought this might be a fun thing to do here. What are some of the things you remember from when you were growing up? I remember: rotary phones vinyl records (even the little 45s) typewriters trick-or-treating from the time you got home from school until whenever you decided to go home going to the corner store with $5 & buying enough candy to last weeks
yes, all that is true.. and our kids will do the same thing to there kids.. but I think they will have to tell and say then we do... I remember old typewriters
I remember penny candy!! When I was small I remember getting a $.25 allowance. I had a nightmare one time that candy bars were $1! I remember 45 albums and my parents even had a few 78's I remember being able to walk home alone from school. Party lines - shared phone lines where you and your neighbors would share the same line. Thank goodness I lived in town and we didn't have to! Only cloth diapers, no choice in the matter! (I was the oldest of 5 and got that duty!) I remember visiting BOCES (tech for high school) and the brains for the computer systems took up an entire room. I'm sure I'll think of more!
Beta VCRs we had one of those tall rotary phones where you dialed on the base, the mouth piece was attached at the top & the ear piece hung on the side my husband remembers 8tracks (he's a few years older than me)
I remember 8 tracks when computers saved things to cassette tapes and cards Arcade games that didn't give you seizures when 'pegging' your pants and tucking them in your socks was the absolute "in" thing. worship before rock songs when Petra really did mean rock when DJs had to label each record with the BPMs to know what to play next sitting in the front seat of the car... before I was 12 walking anywhere in the neighborhood and feeling safe when doing research required books
riding in the bed of a pickup truck - w/o my parents getting in trouble for it when big, teased hair with a whole can of Aqua Net hairspray in it and tight-rolled jeans were 'in' when 'hair bands' became popular and when they died out
I remember the first ATM machines and how cool it was to get money at anytime! No longer waiting for the bank...and of course, I remember when we actually had to run in the store to pay for gas! AND when the gas did not stop on its own and you actually had to manually watch how much you gas you pumped!
I remember; -being able to walk to the store/ park/school alone from age six up and never giving it a second thought. -penny candy and by that it usually meant, two candies for one penny. -my first 45(Bay City Rollers) and 33(Fleetwood Mac Rumours) both played on my plastic, black and white nifty turnable -when you made your Halloween costumes with stuff you had around the house and you could eat anything neighbours gave you. -when neighbourhoods were bustling with unstructured fun and games in any spare moment during daylight hours. -sharing one bathroom with six others and not thinking it was a hassle. -sharing one phone with six others and not having it damage my social life. -fighting for the front seat in the car -riding in the back of trucks with the ball team on the way to games (on the highway!) -how uncomplicated life seemed. Michelle
We didn't just ride in the front seat - there were 5 of us kids, my parents and my grandmother (who was not a small woman!) who would all squeeze in the car to get to church. Along the same idea - I remember squeezing 2 adults and 7 teens into a Pacer Subaru Brats elephant pants (very wide legged jeans) mini skirts/dresses - I rember as a young teen being shocked to see the older girls even wearing these to church Btw, we didn't have to walk 6 miles only 2 but we did have to walk to school even in the middle of winter. I grew up in the Catskills of NY so winter could last until May. We used to joke that if there was a snowstorm and the superintendent of schools could see the flag pole in front of his house, you went to school!
when phones were attached to one spot and one spot only. Any attempt to deviate from that spot would result in knocking down half of mom's chatchkies with the coiling cord. There was something comforting about those old coiley cords. When the boy down the street finally got up the nerve to call and ask "for yesterday's homework", nothing beat the friend that cord became as your fingers twirled it round and round. Only after hanging up would you notice that you yourself had twirled round and round, subsequently capturing yourself in a phone cord prison that was nearly impossible to get out of (and usually involved a sibling or two).
Cabbage Patch Kid dolls made entirely of fabric (no plastic heads back then) Jem (the cartoon & the doll) the summer I was 17 or 18 gas was only 98 cents a gallon when $5 for a movie ticket was expensive
Cameras that took 110 film and the cheapy versions you could get out of cereal boxes. For that matter, when cereal boxes still actually had the toy inside instead of an order form necessitating 5 upc codes and $3 shipping.
Riding my bike or walking to the park or pool or out to my grandpa's in the country and just having to get home before the street lights came on. 8 Tracks My little record player that folded up like a suitcase No car seats Drinking from the water hose Parachute pants Leg warmers
Wow...sounds like we all fairly close in age. I remember leg warmers, 8 tracks, 45s, parachute pants...etc. I remember when MTV first came out. I remember when the Thriller video was anticipated by like everyone...LOL. I remember Mork and Mindy.
I remember after church on Sundays we would go to my grandpa's house in the country and eat fried chicken with all the fixins. Then we would either go fishing or swimming in the creek and swing from vines on the old trees. Oh and I never wore shoes when I didn't absolutely have to. I always would get stickers in my feet. Still to this day I despise having to wear shoes.
I remember BIG HAIR. I remember those HUGE cans of Auqua Net hair spray. I remember when pizza in the school cafeteria was a treat...LOL...yuck! I remember when kids would put dimes in their penny loafers and thought that was cool. I never did. I never liked penny loafers. I was the only kid in the advanced classes who did not have a pair. I remember when you could still read Catcher in the Rye in ps. lol.
I remember watching "The Brady Bunch" on Friday's when it was on - for real - not reruns. I remember Hershey Bars were 10 cents. I remember penny candy. Real, life, penny candy. I remember watching Donny & Marie (I'm a little bit country!). I remember when Coca Cola was sold in returnable glass bottles. I remember when Coca Cola changed their formula - then changed it back. I still have a "New Coke" bottle somewhere here. I remember the first day, and first video of MTV. I remember TV before cable ever showed up on the scene. I remember the first time I saw Star Wars - in a theatre when it was first run. I remember gas costing less that 70 cents. I remember the gas crunch while Jimmy Carter was president. I remember the day that Elvis Presley died. Wow...I'm OLD! LOL!!!
