Friday morning, at 9:00 am, a man comes to my door. I answered it. He said he wanted to discuss our local public schools with me and our homeschooling! He knew that I homeschooled!!!!
I am sure he could have found out through the state since we file an affidavit but it was odd that he came to my house. He looked young, early 20s, and said he was gathering information. I told him I was not interested in discussing anything with him. He continued to say that it was important and it wouldn't take long. As I was closing the door, he asked what the problem is with our schools that keeps me from enrolling Ems in them. I stopped and looked at him.

    WAS HE SERIOUS?

What is wrong with our schools?! YIKES!

I told him he needed to leave. He made a face and asked what the district could do to make me enroll Ems in it? I closed the door on him. As I closed it he quickly asked how many children do I homeschool? :?
I am assuming if he knows I homeschool, he should know how many children I homeschool too.
He left but I could hear him grumbling as he walked away. I have no idea who he was or what he wanted but it was odd that he knew we are a homeschool family. I wonder if he works for the district.

Wow, Patty that is funny, I think you handled it well though I think I would thrown a pie if I had one in his face. But, maybe you should call the school and ask if they have someone working for them going around asking question? I would. In this world now days you can never be safe enough.

He gave his name but that was it. I honestly can't remember his name because I was floored that he knew we homeschool.

ok just call the school on Monday and just say this man came to the door with all kinds of question, don't have to tell them everything just brief and ask them if they have a man that works for them doing this kind of stuff. If you remember what he looks like you might want to tell them that too.

I'm not going to call the school. I feel positive that he was working for them; almost. I didn't feel intimidated by him or feel he was not on the up-and-up. I am just floored that he knows I homeschool. It is so odd to say the least! But, I do remember what he looks like. I remember well. He also had an accent.

ABSOLUTELY what Kris said!!! If he does work for the district, I'd let them know that he did NOT identify himself, and you are not comfortable discussing your children with total strangers. If not, I think the district needs to know that someone is going around; I would even consider reporting it to the police if he isn't someone from the district.

Actually, I do not think I will. I will for sure!
The more I think about it, the more odd it seems that he knows I homeschool but did not know how many children I school.
    Thanks, ladies!!!

    That is just creepy!

Once someone was driving by and stopped to take pics with my kids in the yard and the camera was pointed toward where my kids were playing. Our yard has a short fence pole around the front. Anyway, I see a car stopped in front of my house and I run outside and asked what they were doing since they were snapping off pictures. Anyway, they yelled, "Assessors office". I called the assessors office and they told me they didn't have anyone driving that type of car or taking pics of my house.

At that point I am even more alarmed than I already was and called the sheriff's office.
They did nothing, of course! I wanted them to pull the person over and find out why they were snapping off pics of my kids.
Point, someone was taking pics of my kids and lied about who sent them. You never know about people and their motives.

Why didn't the school district call you from their office instead of sending a complete stranger to your door.

    CREEPY and SCARY!

In our district the schools superintendent knows the names and ages of all the homeschooled kids within their district. A friend of ours is the superintendent... (or co-super actually.) and he asked my dh questions about what they could do to get our kids in the local schools. I dont know if he asked because he had to make an effort on behalf of the school district or if he asked because he's known my hubbys family since my dh was a child.
I'd call for your school superintendent for sure.

In our state there are no lists, nor registrations. Nothing... yet...

Not long after we moved into our new home in a new county....

    A knock at the door.
A 20 ish man with a young lady with him trying to sell a "Homeschooler's Book" It was supposed to be the end-all-be-all book of information for any homeschooler.

His licence plate was from virginia.

He said his name and said hello to me using MY NAME. Saying that he had already spoke to (My neighbors name)....! And wondered out loud how many homeschoolers were in the neighborhood, considering all the kids on this bock.... (His words) With Michelle and her son, Andrew and the millers next door from you with their two young boys.... WHAT!???

I asked him, Do you work for the CIA, because you sure are good at gleaning information and then trying to get confirmation information from others.

That tossed his salad, because he got pissed and I said, how did you know I homeschooled? He said, oh we are just driving around trying to sell this book door to door and stopping at homes with the cars home in the middle of the day.

I asked hiom why are you out of state? What's wrong with Virginia students? He didn't have an answer as he was trying to get me to confirm other information he had about my other neighbors.

Because of his attitude and snideness.. I sent him to the home of the lady who hates salesmen and who thinks all solicitors should be shot.

They weren't of course, but it was fun watching them runn off to their car as she slammed her door.

I got a nice few shots of the car and plates as they drove off.

We turned the info over to the locals with the complaint of soliciting without permission as it is posted in our neighborhood that they can't.

    Never heard another thing...

    But ladies...
    Guard your info.
The truth is simply that companies make their living off selling YOUR information. Information brokering is a multi-million dollar business. And we are just another digit to them.

This guy probably found a job in his local paper (You know the ones that say they need 18 guys who are highly motivated NOW!) and got a hard sell training for a week then headed out across the the usa making sales.

I used to sell things and he was VERY close to being good, but not good enough for this hosuewife, former sales chick to see through him.

He would gather info from one neighbor then feed it off to the other neighbor as if talking about a close friend of his to relax the next person in to confirming or adding more information and so on. Even being condesending with remarks such as (You mean you don't have a support group?) when you do not give him your support groups information and so on... true class, eh?

I now have a note on my door that reads:
    No visitors before 3pm.
All contact with this house, please call (My cell number.) I will never open the door again, as I feel I was LUCKY that it was just a kid selling books...

And my car stays out in the driveway so that people know someone IS here.

Maybe your local school is a failing school, and wants your super-brainy, high scoring homeschooler to boost their grade so they can get more funding. Or maybe the guy was just beamed down from the starship enterprise. It sounded kinda creepy to me....
