Jeannie has chosen studying rocks as our next science unit. Woe is me with this girl! Why can't we do easy stuff like senses and weather?? I wonder if you all would help us out. Would any of you consider sending us a rock- a small one- from your area? Maybe you could include a picture and some info on the area it came from , or direct me to where I might find the info online. The funkier the rock, the better! I'll reimburse postage to whoever asks. I'm hoping to get her a nice sampling of rocks from as many states as we can. If you want to help, pm me and I'll give you our address. Thanks in advance. Becky
That's a good idea Becky! I have a feeling she gets her good ideas from her mother's side! You have a lot of great ideas yourself! I still go with the idea that you should homeschool Jeannie---she's too smart to go to school, she needs her great mom to lead her on these scientific and educational adventures!!! (Just had to take this opportunity to get a word on that in edgewise! )
Flint is Ohio's "gemstone". I'll see if I can find some. I think the kids have some lying around. Also, if she's interested, there's a place here called "Flint Ridge". The native Americans from all over the United States would come there to gather flint to make their arrowheads with. It was considered "neutral" country among warring tribes. Also, we got some fossils last year. Again, I don't know what the kids might be willing to part with, but I might be able to talk them out of a small one. Would you like that, too?
Wow Rocks. My FIL would love you. geology is his passion He drills oil wells. about.com has many subject one being geology. check them out. FIL has lots of rocks and lots of info. I will e-mail him and see what he has.He has iron-ore out of a gold mine,He also has Lava rock from crater lake. I will pm you later.
Thanks for checking, Jackie. Skippy, they all sound like excellent specimens! And look, Deena- I don't think I posted here about what she originally wanted to study. After we watched for you last Sunday she wanted to study blueprints and learn how houses are built! Architecture!!
Hey Becky, if Jeanne likes science a lot you may want to check out www.stevespangler.com I got a catalog in the mail the other day and there are many cool science experiments, kits, and stuff you can get!
Jackie, I think the SHOW inspired Jeannie, not me! My dh works with architectural blueprints (which aren't blue anymore!), so maybe somehow Jeannie gleaned the blueprint thing by osmosis through my husband. Ouch, that's too deep, now I have a headache!
Maybe I should let her watch A Baby Story and see if she wants to study obstetrics and gynecology!! That is, if I could sit through A Baby Story....(....shudder..)
It's a Gross-Me-Out program on the Learning Channel, I think. It follows a couple through the birth of their baby. There's also A Wedding Story and, I think, a Dating Story. I might have that last one wrong.
I used to watch all those shows, they aleays seam to show them in the wrong order. But I got depressed to see all the people having such happy moments, and the wedding one reminded me how I didn't have that big ol wedding I wanted. and well, Mac and I never did much conventional dating. However Becky this weekend we went on a scavenger hunt and found some cool rocks for Jeannie, we are packing up a flat rate box, and I am sure we will be getting our money's worth:lol: The post man will pick it up and say whats in here ROCKS?--- lol but Mac being the knowledgeable guy he is, he identified most of the rocks for us so I am including a cheat sheet for you, with descriptions of the rocks and what they are, we have ignious, quarts, milky quarts and granite, and granite with mica in it, the kids then though Jeannie would like to have some smooth rocks to paint, they had to pick one each for her.
I'd send you some Becky, but I don't think we have much around here that is different from anything else. Just regular old pebbles and gravel and flower-bed rocks.
Than you, ABall! I pm'd you. Well, Jen.. is there something else tiny you could send? Keep the cold air, though!!
There are plenty of squirrels in our yard. The hubby keeps feeding them peanuts so they wont go away!!! They've become his backyard pets! All they do is make squirrel doodie in our lawn.
