I have this giant plastic floor map. I was showing it to a friend today, and it was really weird! Because of this discussion, I was noticing Alaska. Well, you know how world maps often overlap, so at least part of Alaska is on there twice. And the one connected to Russia is noticably smaller than the one connected to Canada!!!

    Okay, so... I'm just curious:

Why did you start this thread? Were you genuinely asking, testing our knowledge, or what? hehehe I'm just curious. I thought it was an interesting question for this board when I saw it... and now I'm itching to know.

    Alaska. Why?

wow, that is funny how they put things on a map out of context, and we are supposed to teach oru kids with it?
How about on a globe? Is that pretty much equal as it should be?

I am re-learning with my daughter. There are somet things that I think are the answer and when I looked them up with her, it's different.
The game plan to do a lap book of the US. It will be done in regions. Northeast, southeast, midest and I think west coast. That's 4 and I think there is 5.

Speaking of globes will someone please call my husband and tell him I NEED A GLOBE!!!! The wall map just isn't cutting it anymore.

This thread is funny to me since I was born in Alaska, grew up there, and return with my children every summer.

You'd be surprised how many people I've encountered over the years who think Alaska is part of Canada!

When we lived in Texas my husband once argued with someone over the size of Alaska compared to Texas. The other person (no joke) said "but my Alaska magnet is smaller than my Texas magnet on my fridge."

I hope the "Alaska is mostly ice" comment above was a joke! (???) ;)

Where at in Alaska are you from? I'd love to live up there...I think! I know it would take some adjustments, though!

I finally got my globe. I looked around town and finally go it at the learning store. For the price you think the thing would light up or something. Oh well, I am happy now to have one. :)

Our globe is an inflatable one from Alpha Omega like a beach ball. When we aren't using it Babyboy plays with it and we have to go look for it when we want it back. Beth

Just north of Anchorage in a place we call "the valley"! I really miss it! Only 2 weeks and we go for a visit!!! :D Summers there are always fun for my kids because the daylight hours are so long- especially in June.

hehehe Actually no, it wasn't a joke.... I did actually read somewhere, quite recently though I don't remember where, that if you melted the ice in Alaska it would be smaller than TX. I know that a lot of it IS green wilderness also though. ;) I have a friend who moved there shortly after getting married; her husband was military and stationed there. (He's now in Iraq, though I think he is/was supposed to be coming home soon....) So I've seen a lot of green wilderness Alaska pics, though I've never been there.

Anyway, with the fact that it is more than twice TX size, and with what I read about if you melted the ice it would be smaller, logic states that this makes Alaska "mostly" ice... even if a lot of it - TX size or almost anyway - is still green stuff.

Now I'll have to go look and see where I read that and if it's even right. LOL Like I said, I dont' even remember where I read it! ;)

We hope to one day go to all 50 states, Alaska and Hawaii included. How funny that some people think it's in Canada??? What do they think the 50th state is?? ROFL!

It's okay ;) I've heard it all with Alaska. One friend thought the Aleutian Islands were tropical  (they're not). My dad is partner in a company that surveys mass amounts of government owned land in Alaska which takes him all over the state. (Close to 90% of the state is government owned) I can assure you, it's all land!

We lived in Hawaii for 3 years and an interesting fact about the big island is that it's land mass is constantly growing because of the volcano!

One summer he worked near Cordova and we visited him for a week! That was a neat town!

Fun Alaska facts for the kids:
*Some areas get 24 hours of daylight in the summer
*Because of the midnight sun the vegtables grow very large!
*Some areas get 24 hours of darkness in the winter
*We bought it from Russia for the bargain price of 2 cents an acre!
*Only 55 miles east of Russia
    *3 million lakes
*29 active volcanoes (80% of US active volcanoes)
*more coastline than the rest of the US combined.
*Highest mountain on North America (Mt.McKinley)

I can't post links yet otherwise I'd share some fun websites for the kids!

    THREE MILLION LAKES???? WOWNESS!!!

I think I'd heard the volcanoes fact, and I know I've heard at some point about its proximity to Russia and about the 24 hour days/nights. Are the parts that have 24 hour days during the summer the same parts that have 24 hour nights during the winter?? <scratches head>

YES! :) I don't know the exact dates but the northern town of Barrow -it's on the top tip of Alaska- is totally dark for 3 months in the winter, and totally light for 3 months in the summer.

BTW we lived in Texas for 6 months and out of all the places we've lived the people (locals) there were just as friendly and nice as in Alaska.

That reminds me that New Mexico has it's problems with that kind of thing too. I lived in NM for 2 years. One story told me was that someone had moved there, and suddenly noone was writing to him or her. When they checked it out, they found that people who were sending the mail to this person in New Mexico, were getting the mail back stamped "Foreign postage required"!
