"The length of the state of California is 770 Miles / 1239 km (east to west). The width of the state of California is 250 Miles / 402 km (north/south)." That doesn't seem right! Isn't the length of California N/S and the width E/W?
LOL Yes and the measurements are right... someone must have just typed the directions backwards on the site itself. At least that's what I figure.
If you were to divide Alaska into two states evenly, they would both be larger than Texas! We are deceived into thinking Alaska is smaller, because on most maps it isn't drawn proportionally to the Lower 48.
Well, according to the History Channel's series 'The States,' Alaska's the largest state--- unless you're talking about continental US. That show is really awesome, by the way, and I speak as someone who HATES geography!
I know I was wrong, we were number 3 though , thats good enough for me! Im not picky, I just knew something was bigger, and it turned out to be our population , how blessed are we? HAHA! I would rather live in Texas, thats where a lot of our friends are moving!
We had this conversation last week. The disproportion on the maps threw the boys. They didn't believe me when I told them Alaska was bigger. We had to do alot of research to prove it. It was a good lesson
Another question about the states? Ohio- is it midwest or northeast? I got this book from the library on the Northeast states and Ohio was in it. I always thought of Ohio as a Midwest state. I have done a quick search and most places I have seen Ohio is still under the midwest. Is this another one that people are divided on? Just like the, Is Pluto a planet or moon? Then I saw that there's another ocean out there and on my daughter's time for Learning it showed Austrila as Oceania? Guess things have changed since I graduated from school in '96?
You took the words out of my mouth! Don't you just love our crowded freeways?! I just love them! I can't wait until 2012 or was it 2020 when our freeways will be busting at the seams, they will no longer be able to be used because the grid lock will so bad, cars will no longer be able to move. This is according to Arnold! I didn't believe it when he shared this info a few years ago but now it takes 3 1/2-4 hours, in traffic, to travel 100 miles on our busiest freeways, so it makes me wonder if there is some truth to what he is saying. Ya that would be better too! Though I just got back from a wonderful trip to Clear Lake this weekend, it is so fresh and beautiful there! hard to get to it though, windy roads and all that. But I would much rather live in WA! In fact I watned to ask what side of rainier thta photo you gave me was from?
California, largest fresh water lake in California, that is not man made! Tahoe does nto count cause it shares itself with Nevada. look on your map just above the bay area you can see it.
You guys are so funny! You know, Bigger isn't ALWAYS better! LOL I think I knew in the recesses of my brain that it was Alaska, but TX was my first thought. BTW...PO does not care about Periods. The scanners are set to read numbers. It reads the ZIP and distributes it based on that. That is why the post office prefers that the zip be on a line by itself. I just learned this the other day at the post office....I thought it was neat! times have changed! A few weeks ago I saw the mr. Rogers where he visits the post office - it was done a little differently in the early 70's! NO WONDER stamps are so expensive now. They have more than doubled in my lifetime. When I was in 2nd grade, to send a 1 oz letter cost 16 cents. EEEEK!!! Besides, all ya'll....PA is the BEST state! LOL
I know they keep changing the machines , my hubby has to go to a traning center every time they get a new one! Then he trains other people how to fix them!
I once saw a scale drawing of the united states.. with Alaska next to it. I KNEW that Alaska was the largest.. but I didn't realize it was as BIG as it is for that reason above!
