So true Also, I think I mentioned Grease in the first post becasue I have John Travolta on my mind! I know it's from the 70's. I just finished watching the remake of Hairspray and it was AWFUL! He should have never been cast in that role.
Oh my gosh...look what I found!!!! A whole website devoted to 80's movies!!! 562 of them to be exact!!! Oh my Netflix queue will be longer then ever now!!! http://www.fast-rewind.com/Browse.htm I almost forgot about 3 o'clock High ( cooler then My Bodyguard for sure!!) and Christine ( which is my oldest dd's middle name)!!!
Tiff.. We are getting Pet Cemetary from netflix this weekend.. I can't wait.. man Garrett is gonna be so scared!!! lol Both it and Children of the Corn were 80's movies Crystal.. that site is like awesome.. I could stay there forever!
Enjoy your movie Sommer. When I was younger I named one of my cats Church like in the movie. Children of the Corn still creeps me out!
I'm a child of the 80s; grew up watching the bad 80s movies & still love them. My dh's faves are Ferris Bueller & Breakfast Club. I don't think I could pick a fave. All the movies listed in the original post, I'd let my kids watch when they're older (they're 4 & 10 now). I'm big on horror movies, too and love Stephen King movies. Dd wasn't into scary movies for a while, but a year or so ago, I got her to watch Cujo. Now she keeps begging me to let her watch more of my Stephen & horror collection. We just bought Gremlins & Critters. Both the kids watched Gremlins & loved it. DD changed the name of one of her stuffed animals to Gizmo. I'm gonna let dd watch Critters, not sure if I'll let ds watch it or wait a little on that. He has watched at least 1 Stephen King movie, though. With my kids, I'm more concerned about nudity & sex than about violence. My kids understand the difference between fake & real. They know that what happens in movies is not real. I've been watching horror movies as long as I can remember & I don't think it affected me any. I don't know if I'll be able to watch the first Nightmare on Elm Street with them though. I laugh through the whole thing now. Especially the scene where Freddy is running down the ally chasing someone, and his arms are getting longer & longer, so he hae scratch against the garages. He looks like a giant Stretch Armstrong doll & I end up in tears from laughing so hard at how bad the effects were. As I was reading the responses, I couldn't believe how many of the movies mentioned are currently in our collection (and many that we don't already own are on our movie wish list). My hubby was fairly sheltered & a lot of the movies I grew up watching, he never saw until we got together. He still hasn't seen Adventures in Babysitting.
Brandi, I hadn't watched Nightmare on Elm Street since I was a kid, and when we watched it last weekend I was like man I was so freaked out by those movies as a kid!! My best friend and I, from the time we were in about 2nd or 3rd grade were horror film fiends.. we would spend the night every weekend together.. either her house or mine.. and we would have a horror movie fest.. this went on for YEARS..lol.
When I was about 8, my sis & I were watching Critters 2. When you kill the Critters (or their eggs), this green gooey stuff comes out. My dad decided to try to gross us out, by bringing us hot dogs with mustard that he had dyed green. It was the exact color of the stuff that came out of the Critters. It was hilarious! It's one of my favorite childhood memories. At least I know there's someone else out there that watched that kind of stuff so young. Most people can't believe that I was watching horror movies by the time I was 6, or that I was reading Stephen King by 8.
I still won't watch it. I can't stand horror movies... I used to cover my eyes when the video to Thriller came on!!! I know I'm a wuss... Just give me a funny love story. I'm lucky my hubby loves chick flicks!!! Footloose is on demand on Charter this weekend. FYI watched Prince in concert & a few mins of Purple Rain!!!
I would let my kids (at the right age) watch some 80s movies. I'm not into horror films so those won't make the cut. I agree with Tiffany. I don't think any of the 80s movies that I allow the kiddos to watch are going to greatly influence their choices at this stage. We, as their parents, are much bigger influences at this stage of the game and they would only be watched with us. Wow....now I want to watch Footloose (after reading all the posts)!
We actually watched "The Making of Thriller" about the making of the video in elementary school for a combo art/music class. I still remember sitting in the "cafetorium" on the hard wood floor watching it..lol.
Some girls were watching that at a slumber party. I left the room!!! LOL!!! I still don't like that song "Somebody's watching me" It freaks me out!!! LOL!!!
Gasp! you don't like 80's movies!!!! My husband would have a heart attack. He love, loves the old stuff from back in the day. Your list, I haven't seen most of but... Breakfast Club. even I like Breakfast Club. That sceane where she shakes her dandruff on the drawing to make snow!!!!! CLASSIC. Ferris Beuller, another perfect defy the parents movie, you don't want your kids to see that? We had about a million discussions on why running the car backward won't work. If Ferris was homeschooled, he would be considered a genius. My husband made the girls watch all of those old movies... everything with John Cusack and Emelio Estevez. Sure thing. (when they are older) St Elmo's Fire MY favorite is Dirty Dancing... I can see reasons why not to let the kids see these... but after 16...I'm ok with it. How about the Outsiders, that was late 70's? yes? oh, and if we are talking Patrick Swayze, how about Roadhouse! (just kidding)
I really like Can't Buy Me Love but the others I do not really care for. I also remember enjoying Love Potion #9 but have not seen that in a long time. I cannot think of the name but there was one where there were two nerds (a boy and a girl) who reinvented themselves as exchange students and were popular. I remember enjoying that movie but I cannot think of the name.
