Hi guys, does anyone know much about these books-

Spine for Bible history/world history- The Annals of the World by James Ussher

    International Children's Bible Handbook

    The Creation Story (Dorling Kindersley)

Genesis for Kids: Science Experiments That Show God's Power in Creation!

History for little pilgrims by Christian Liberty Press

God's Amazing Creation: Genesis, Chapters 1 and 2 (Discover 4 Yourself Inductive Bible Studies for Kids)

Digging Up the Past: Genesis, Chapters 3-11 (Discover 4 Yourself Inductive Bible Studies for Kids)

    Mrs. Frizzle's Adventures: Ancient Egypt

Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile by Tomie dePaola

    Croco'nile by Roy Gerrard

    The Egyptian Cinderella

Ancient Egypt (Make it Work! History) crafts

After much serching online these seem to be the most suitable for first grade, what do you think? I loved the book list but they seem better for slightly older kids.

I've heard of the James Ussher book. It's a pretty in-depth history of the world; I'm not sure I would use it for first grade. But you might want to use it for yourself, to help you teach. Bill and Pete, by Tomie DePaula I'm familiar with, too. It's a picture book. Bill and Pete are a crocodile, and I think that little bird that cleans the croc's teeth, so is very appropriate for a first grader. (I REALLY like Tomie DePaula!) While I agree that most of the books I mentioned are more appropriate for middle/older kids, my Phillip is 7, and has listened to me read many of the books aloud. It amazes me how well he listens, and I really don't think he's unique that way! You might want to pick out one or two of those "older" books and give it a try!

Oh, Jim Weiss has a tape/CD of Egyptian myths. I'm sorry, I don't have the title handy. I lent my copy of MOH I to a friend, and I wrote the title in that. It tells tales of the Eyptian gods, and would be appropriate for a first grader!

"Egyptian Treasures, Mummies and Myths" is by Jim Weiss. Is that the one you are talking about Jackie?

That's probably it. He's done so many different ones, on a variety of topics. He's an excellent story teller!

OH, HEIDI!!! Did you have your older daughter see the movie "One Night with the King"? It was based on Tommy Tenney's book "Hadassah: One Night with the King". I read the book... one of the best I had read in a LONG time!!!...and took both of my girls to see the movie. (Not as good as the book, but....). For Gracie, he has a kids' version. I think it's called "Hadassah: The girl who would be Queen Esther". Faythe read it. After reading the original, I felt it was rather empty. But for children, it's probably very good. I know Faythe really liked it!

DaLynn, thanks for bringing it back. I don't know if I ever told Jackie that we enjoyed Shadow Spinner. Our reading from Vol II has extended into the summer. We inter-library loaned The Trial and Burning of John Huss, an Eye-Witness Account and are finishing the final lesson by memorizing John 1:1-4, as L. Hobar recommends.

    Sounds terrific!
(I'll admit, I have no clue what you're talking about, but it sounds like you're enjoying it! )

I'm going to peruse it a bit and see if I can find the books etc. I just got hold of a TOC for MOH and so this list sparked my interest.

I'm getting so excited about history, I feel silly! LOL

Anyway, you're welcome. Maybe someone who missed it before but can use it will spy it this time. :)

My birthday was during our homeschool conference, so Carl wasn't able to take the kids out to get me something (which really is no big deal to me!) But Rachael found the Hadassah movie at a booth there, and the kids went in to get it for me. I thought it was very sweet of her to think of me!

Sorry, Artsy! That would be difficult. MOH is designed to be multi-level. When I started, I used it with grades pre-k, 3, and 6. Many of these books I used as read-alouds, others I would assign to one particulaar child. My youngest was very good at listening to rather difficult stories, as long as he could draw or color while I was reading.

I'm using a basic MOH (Mystery of History) outline, from their Table of Contents viewable for free online. We'll be learning things with both my third grader and my kindergartners. (3 and 4, prek/k.)
We're going to take longer in ancient history than just 9 months though, covering the 4-year history divisions in more like 5 and a half years. ;)

I spent two years on MOH I. But with II, Rachael was in a co-op one day a week, and we had to keep to their schedule.

We spent two years on Ancient History. There was just SSOOOOO much to do and learn---my two youngest absolutely loved it! Even my oldest, who was doing other things, jumped on the bandwagon for some of the activities (making cuneiform clay tablets, and writing heieroglyphics on "papyrus" paper--[I found real papyrus, but the cost was prohibitive, so I used another type of paper I found that came as close to the same texture as the real thing]--, building a nomad shelter, etc., etc.)! We were working from Story of the World at that time. It was great! We're using MOH II this coming year for Bible.

WOW!!! THanks for posting this. I'm not using MOH next year - but using Ancient Civilizations and the Bible and a lot of these reading resources will be AWESOME to go along with it!!!
