So the question is where CAN you buy material from, besides Jo Ann's, and I think even Jo Ann's has cut back quite a bit. The last time I was in, it seemed as if they moved their quilting notions across the aisle to where had been more material. And I don't like Jo Ann's that much to begin with. I prefered it when it was a sewing store, not an "everything" store. There are some quilting shops I know of with beautiful material, but even Jo Ann's is cheap compared to those! I'm a quilter, Jen! So I still pick 100% cotton most of the time!
Here we have Hobby Lobby but I've never had a chance to really look at their fabric. Other than that and Jo-Anns we really don't have much that I know of.
I do not know if they are nation-wide or not, but we also can choose from Hancock Fabrics for fabric. Of course, no one seems as low as Wally-world, which is why most of my fabric is from there. Tell ya what... with the recient news stories that sewing is back in vogue.... Classes filling us and so on.. this could be a great oportunity for someone to start up a business with this idea of just selling fabric Dunno...
Just for grins, I found these articles a minute ago.... In reference to Walmart http://www.lincolncourier.com/story.asp?SID=4403&SEC=8 http://www.baxterbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070119/NEWS01/701190308/1002
you would be suprized at how many people sell fabric on E-bay. I bought some stuff to make for the kids, ----ummm, still havn't....... hope Eva still likes care bears in 10 years, that will probably be when I get to it. I don't sew so I'm kind of glad that wal-mart is expanding the craft department. by the way, I just answered a question I thought was rather silly for an E-bayer: we are selling jeans Q: what material are they made from? A: denim--- Maybe that wasn't a silly question, but I think most jeans are made from denim arent they?
Here are some articles about sewing making a "Comeback".... (I have the song "I was Country, When Country wasn't cool" In my head, right now.. wonder why? ahaha!) http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/16460658.htm http://www.theadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070120/BUSINESS/701200308/1046 Just in time for the new wave of stitchers, the sewing machine industry has introduced computerized machines that make sewing easier. Ana Pingel didn't beg for an iPod or a Play Station 3 for Christmas -- but the 11-year-old made sure her parents knew she wanted a sewing machine. sewing has become ... hip? Traffic in the United States to lifestyle, hobbies and crafts websites increased 21 percent in just four months from August to November 2006, according to Hitwise. As sales of sewing machines rocket, we chart the unlikely rise of DIY fashion... reaping what you sew. CLAIRE COLEMAN investigates on how to make yourself a new wardrobe. Anyway, this is a few things I read, after hearing about this new "Trend" on the tv news.... enjoy!
Well, in my mind, if they are not denim or cordaroy (SP?) then they must be "Slacks"! hahaha! OOh! Does anyone know exactly what material that "Parachute Pants" were made of? Yea, from the 80's. I never looked at the tags...
The Wal-Mart closest to us just remodeled and they consolidated their sewing/craft sections. I never even thought to check on their fabric.. That was before I got my machine, so I wasn't thinking about needing it! There is another Wal-Mart not very far away, though, and I don't think they have remodeled this year, so they probably still have their fabric. I love Hobby Lobby! Is their fabric expensive? I have shopped around yet, as you can no doubt tell. I've been checking sewing books out of the library and going through them. I ordered some supplies from www.Joanns.com (they had a big sale - yayy!), and I'm thinking that this coming week I'm going to go to a thrift store and buy a bunch of cheap sheets to cut up and play with.
I didn't price the fabric in Hobby Lobby because we mainly went in looking for rub-ons. I was repairing some couch covers this evening and Joyce was asking to help so I guess I need to shop around! I need to find a good beginner project for her. Jane made curtains out of sheets and that was a good starter project. I love that idea because I can get sheets that match their spreads and make their curtains the way they want ie. drapes or cafe. Jane had purchased a bed-in-a-bag leopard print and was able to use the flat sheet to make really cute curtains and topped them with beaded rick-rack. Jen, I laugh every time I hear Wally World as it makes me think of Chevy Chase!
This is late in the thread but do all JoAnns give HSers a discount? I am going to have to call. I love that store. I def. take advantage of the 50% and 40% coupons. Our Wal-mart still has fabric. They just upgraded to a super walmart and still have all the sewing stuff. Walmart here doesn't have a good selection of craft stuff like JoAnns. I like Micheals but it is over 30 minutes away from me. I miss Hobby Lobby. My mom will go there and get stuff and mail me stuff.
In my experience, JoAnns, with their coupons, has been the cheapest after Walmart, even sometime BETTER than walmart. But I do not know about homeschool discounts, that would be a bonus! But most of all, the quality is better... Most of the stuff at our walmarts are just heavily starched printed cotton that fades and shrinks massively after the pre-wash.
I am fairly certain that all of the JoAnns offer hs discount. I have mine but I don't remember how I requested it! I know I went through their website and they gave me a code to enter. It is worth trying. I'm thinking my sis in NY had to show something from the BOCES program there so it may vary from state to state.
If you go to www.joanns.com and put in Teacher Appreciation Program in the search spot it will take you to where you need to go to sign up for a discount card for hsing.
