I remember thinking like this, until I worked on a urological and surgical unit, and had to care for grammar school aged boys and grown men, who had horrible repeated infections from being left "intact", and ended up coming in for a circumcision later in life. I have also witnessed newborn babes having the procedure done: not nearly as traumatic, not even close, not in the same league. There was no way I would ever even want to take a chance that my boys would have to go through that later in life. Thankfully, my second son had his done shortly after birth, because he didn't come home to us until later; I had no say in whether or not he had the procedure. I'm not saying that all uncircumcised men will end up having to go through this, just that it was so hideous, I wouldn't chance it. I also wouldn't call circumcision "genital mutilation".
I guess we should remove a baby's tonsils and appendix at birth, too... you know, just in case. My favorite quote on the subject:
Sorry. It wasn't my intention to start this. Perhaps we should return to our "regularly scheduled thread..."?
I'm with you. I think I saw one episode in reruns. We didn't have cable until well after Blossum's hey day and neither on the two Canadian channels we had carried it. She's always been sort of a phantom celebrity for me. I've had to take other people's word that she's famous. (my attempt to get back into safe territory)
Amie, I would be interested if you would start another thread about the cause you were talking about. I was only very recently aware of this movement and I'm wondering how it will play out for the Jewish community or for those who want to continue to practice God's plan for...uh...those parts.
Jolie and Pitt are not really homeschooling, like others said, they are having their children privately schooled at home. Plus they would probably have their kids in the best private school that money can buy, if it were not for their hectic lives and travelling. Also, I'm wondering, she said that the school standards are not up to par, which someone like me can agree with, based on the kinds of schools I have access to, but she is a hotshot celebrity, she should have access to some of the best schools in the nation, and she still thinks they're not up to par.... One another note, I just googled Foreskin Man. My sons are circumcised, but I respect the fact that everyone has a right to their own opinion about this issue. That comic, however, is offensive and insulting, to jews in particular, and it crosses the line.
I've always been a fan of Mayim Bialik's and follow her on Facebook. She is actually a very devout Jew and both of her boys ARE circumcised. She has written about it in her blogs. She has taken a lot of flak for that recently by a lot in the attachment parenting community. She had to delete a lot of really nasty comments on her fb page.
And why should it be the business of anyone but herself if she choses to circumcise her boys? GEESH!!!
I agree. It isn't anyones business, but I think some people inquired because they knew she was Jewish. It was really bad, the things that were said. She is the celebrity spokeswoman for Holistic Moms Network and a lot were calling for her to no longer be because she circumcises. Again, it's HER business and hers alone. Her faith calls for it and she is very observant.
HeeHee. Reading this Board is a whole lot of fun (oh, sorry, I just read the first page). Yes, I retired over ten years ago. I used to be a social worker. I worked diligently to keep families together, even when the parents went to jail for severe drug abuse. The bottom line is that parents' rights have always been VERY important to me, and I honor each family's decision as to whether or not to have the procedure. I'm just glad right now that I have a daughter - didn't have to make THAT decision. I'm glad the Angelina and Brad have decided to homeschool. It'll make it seem more mainstream. Many blessings, DawnB Homeschoolin' Mom to DD age 14-1/2
