Dawn, my understanding is that this was a JEWISH interpretation. And the fact still remains that this is the ONLY place where the rules are changed. I'd be interested in reading the balking, though!
I think we crossed wires. You're right about the word "day" definitely meaning day in Hebrew. You're absolutely right! But in the Hebrew traditon their use of "day" probably didn't mean anything literal. That can't be said for sure but the modern tradition of Jewish scholarship would probably maintain ancient Hebrews didn't have a literal view of Genesis and a lot of ancient cultures seem not to have been as literal as moderns tend to think. I don't mean this to dismiss your view. All my points are moot if your view of the Bible is of the revealed literal word of God. Who cares what the Hebrews thought if God really DID mean for it to be literal after all and revealed that later to the Christians. I just don't subscribe to that and thought it might be interesting to share a different view. Evolution/creation tends to often get discussed in ters of science but there's lots of room for a biblical discussion as well.
Jesus apparently took Genesis & the Old Testament literally. He spoke of Adam & Eve, Jonah, etc... Yes, interesting...
Well, if Autumn doesn't mind us talking about these things, I don't either. Let's see, Matt 12 quotes Jesus as saying that just as Jonah was 3 days in the belly, so He (Jesus) would be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Luke 11:30 says "For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation." As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. I Cor. 15:22 If Adam and Jonah were not literal, than by that logic Jesus wasn't either... But He should know about these things. He was there. In fact, He did it. St. John chapter one says by Him were all things made.
Aggie, we attended a Truth Project conference. Profoundly thought-provoking, to say the least! I think you'd be interested in the tour of the cell, which I posted a link to in a separate thread. It's like a galaxy all its own! Thrilling, in fact! But maybe dial up wouldn't let you access that either. Some day we may have access to all the mysteries of the universe, whether the micro-universe of the cell or the macro-universe of our galaxy and beyond.
