PDA, I thought your research was excellent. You weighed the pros and cons,Something our politicians need to do more of I think I was the one that initiated Columbine. What I intended as being a comment on mental maturity and mindset turned into gun laws. What it all boils down to is respect of life.Does a child have the ability to determine when to shoot? Well, This 8 year old girl on a trip with her daddy did. I hope to hear more from you I do think that having an automatic weapon might be overkill. I just want to protect my self. But all in all When it is my time to go, I'll be happy to meet Jesus. What stirred your interest in antique guns?

You know, Skippy, I recently saw a documentary called "Beyond the Gates of Splendor". It was about Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, and the others that were speared in Amazon Rainforest back around 1957. They had guns with them when they were killed, and had decided that if it came down to it, they would NOT use them against other humans to defend their lives. The comment made was "We are ready to meet our Maker, they are not", or something of that sort. And I was thinking of that comment the yesterday as I read through this thread. I don't have a problem AT ALL with you carrying a gun, especially when you have large amounts of money with you. I don't have a problem with a conceal-carry law. I've said before that anyone who is shot in the process of harming another person or their property deserves it. I still believe that. But then I wonder of the mindset of these martyrs. Perhaps that should be ours, too? One thing I DO know...I might be hesitant at shooting to defend myself, but it would be another story when it came to defending my kids!

    skippy7781,

    Thanks you for your interest.

I developed an interest in collecting early and mid-twentieth century military firearms and memorabilia. My own hard work has translated into quite a quality collection of historically significant items. Of course, with safety as my primary concern, I enjoy and am very adept at displaying and presenting an educational discourse on the historical aspects of my collection.

When I bought a Yugoslavian SKS, I did some research and I found it extremely interesting. It was used by the Soviet Yugoslavians in the mid-60's before being replaced by the much more effective AK-47. The SKS was short-lived in the Soviet Union as well as just about all the satellites.

The AK-47 was more simple than the SKS. Had a magazine capacity of 30 rounds, while the SKS had only 10. And was capable of fully automatic fire, while the SKS was a semi-auto. But millions were produced, because they were cheap to produce. The SKS was used in the Korean War, Vietnam, as well as modern day conflics.

Due to the collaspe of the Soviet Union in 1991 many small arms have bacome available to the American market for low prices. The ex-Soviet surplus is extremely cheap when compared to Amercain made guns.
I have several other Soviet made guns in addition to the SKS, as well as fireamrs from other countries.

I am a history buff and enjoy researching the historical significance of antique guns and such. :D

Welcome, PGA. I read with much interest your post in its entirety. Thanks for the ammunition (pun absolutely entended ;) ) regarding gun safety and ban statistics.

Settlers....missed ya! Wondered what might be going on. Considered leaving myself. Instead I just quit reading everything for several weeks until the male bashing had subsided. I see it has begun to rear its ugly head once more. I'm sorry about the tone your son received.

I don't want to lose a wonderful outlet for homeschooling wisdom, but I also don't like certain behavior being passed off as "just who it is". "Sorry, Newbie. You'll have to take that kind of crap from Soandso. That's just who they are. Please don't be offended." Well, hate to tell you people, but what on earth is going on here???? NO, it's not okay and never will be. Nobody, especially a new person, should be asked to take that nonesense.

I like history myself. I didn't used to. I have a freind that used to collect guns. He was an old man and he was a fighter pilot. He used to have a plane painted like a bright red shark. I miss him.He had guns from the Civil War.He was a passionate man when it came to his treasures. I enjoy a good debate. I was at an antique store a while back. They had a uniform from the Civil War. When It comes to dealing with antiques, the more you know about the piece, the more likely you aare to get your price at auction.Do you go to gun shows?

To tell you the truth ,I say I'd pull the trigger. But truth be known, when ever something scares me, My legs go weak and drop out from under me.My left hand draws up.I am not sure how effective I would be.I had a panic button under the counter at my last yard. maybe I will do that here. If I did kill someone, I would close up shop.

OMG! Everyone needs to get a grip. As I go back a read all the posts I have missed within the last day I am flabbergasted.

First of all, PGA, I am in awe that you took the time to post information about gun control. I respect that, but everyone also needs to respect others personal opinions. Even all the facts in the world are not going to make me like guns.

My husband enjoys hunting, and his family, and I am not against that. I just think that guns need to be abolished. There is no good in guns. It's not like they were invented for a Godly purpose, so we don't need them. Things that get invented like that only make our world worse. Know what I mean? There is a reason why this world gets worse by the minute and it's because humans don't know when to stop. And it will only get worse, sadly.

I think everyone has made this to be a personal thread, and I don't know why. It's sad that we can't just say "I don't like guns and they suck", or "I enjoy hunting and so do my kids" without being ignorant. I am not going to judge any of you for taking your kids hunting, who may even be younger. But I am not saying that I would let my son at age 8 go out. But it's ok to have different parenting styles. That's what makes our world go round. What may be right for your family, just may not be right for my family, and that's ok.

Now I think we all need to grow up and think before we talk/type or else many beloved people around here are going to end up leaving and poor Amanda's hard work at the HHS will have gone to waste. Think of how many people are reading this and going "I don't want to be a part of that". I use to think that this was a happier place than A to Z. I am starting to think otherwise lately because of all the senseless bickering. Let's be adults shall we? If someone says something that you don't agree with, then shrug it off if you can't say things nicely:).

Hey, PGA!!! Since you're a gun history buff, I got a question for you, something DH and I learned recently. (He's interested in muzzle loaders, but don't have the time or money now to invest in them.) Anyway, do you know why the first guns in this country didn't have scopes on them?

First of all, I am sorry I have to close this thread.

Before I go into anything else I want to talk about closed threads. It's not a reflection of this being a bad topic or that you all need to be censored (or whatever reason anyone doesn't appreciate a "closed" thread). Feel free to open another thread with the same topic, but keep in mind what I say below in reference to keeping things positive. I am trying to make a point by closing this thread. When you encounter a thread with a negative tone, you should "close" it in your mind. Don't let it ruin your day... Focus on something positive. Don't respond. Don't always have to get the last word. I am closing this thread so you can take the opportunity to walk away. If you need to resolve things privately, do that. If you want to continue a constructive conversation in another thread, do that. :)

I've said this before, but life is short. Is it worth your time to worry and fight over little things such as this?

I know that everyone here at Homeschool Spot is very passionate and it is so hard to just ignore things. It's hard to pass over a thread without saying something or getting the last word.

I suggest that people ignore threads that they don't agree with and to not let the little things get to you. I say if you don't want to be a part of the negativity, don't post in those types of threads, or if you do, keep it positive. I understand if this is hard for you to do and you would rather not visit. I don't want anyone to feel like they can't visit. The forum is a direct result of who participates... If anyone does not like the tone of it, change it. Post a new topic about something that will benefit all. If you want to post about a controversial topic, do so in a positive way and understand that everyone will not agree. Don't take things personally. Treat others with respect. Don't respond to negative posts, or to topics that irritate you.

I don't know what else to say.

    I will reiterate, however...

This forum is what you make it. Change it into what you want it to be.
