Okay girls.. I'm really going to live wild here. Whoo hoo.. I'm going to order off Ebay..

I have never bought anything on Ebay...but I haven't been able to find a good coffee old fashion percolator either...

I have used them for years and it is getting very hard to find one..

I bought one recently at Walmart and it has died w/in 3 weeks.

My last one I had lasted 6 years and it made the most WONDERFUL cup of coffee..

Anyway, momma can't school unless her cup of coffee is great in the morning..So this is a dire situation:lol:

So I need all the expert advice on the do & do nots of Ebay I can get as I need to get one now..

I gather since I don't have a paypal account, I can open one up free..?

I think all you need to open a paypal account is a charge card, sometimes you can do an E-check. A lot of people on E-bay will take money orders or personal checks, but like you said, you want it now! My husband and I run my mom's e-bay store, we actually pluck all the things right from her store that we think will sell better on e-bay. Sorry but we don't have any purkalators. ----well let me call her and see if she has some at her store. but or E-bay store is called super_discount_outlet
Good luck on your E-bay quest, its fun! just make sure you check the persons feed-back before you bid!

I sell and buy many items from e-bay. I think you were already told to make sure you check feedback. That is a must for me. I've gotten many schooling items from e-bay, we even purchased our van from e-bay!

There isn't any paper work to do for E-bay, unless you write down the item # they give you for your item, and when you print a label. We keep about 50 items on at most times, my mom does print out the item description one for her records incase theres a problem later and one to know exactly what to pack in the box that she inclueds in the box it will have the item # and persons name and address on it. She prints the postage paid (by buyer) label out and tapes it to the box so she doesn't have to stand in line at the post office. (there is a drop box for ready to go parcels)

two Christmas' ago we bought a lot of stuff off e-bay for the kids, and we kept telling the kids that the packages were tools for daddy's work ;)

Feedback is next to the persons name, the number there. Click on it and you can read anything someone said about their transactions. The percentage tells you how many are postive and how many are negative. The feedback is sooooo important. It will tell you how well they communicate, how fast they ship, if they are good to deal with. Most people want things to go smoothly. Tell them if you are having trouble and most people will be glad to help. There is also a Forum you can go that also helps answer questions. I have been selling for about 2 years and it has really helped supplement our income(I am paying off the credit card with it!). Also, getting rid of unwanted stuff that I know someone else will want. I check out the current listings to decide if I could really sell it or not. If I don't think it will sell, I don't put it on, just so I don't have the pay the fees. They aren't much if you sell often. The price listing is what it will start at. You can put what you would be willing to pay for it(DON'T forget to figure in your shipping!) and they will bid up for you IF someone else bids on it.
Put in "percolator" first and see what you come up with. Then, put in the brand like "Farberware percolator". That will help you narrow it down. Be aware that some people will not put the brand there, so sometimes you can get it cheaper if you see it and someone else doesn't(like - you look at the listing and see it is the brand you want, but they didn't put the brand in the listing title).
I have really gotten into this - can you tell? LOL

    Hi Tina!!
Hope your gang is all over the flu now. Yuck!! Welcome to ebay also. This is where I get most of my homeschool stuff, and where we sell things from time to time also. DH has sold cars and car parts on there and he says it is easy to sell (I choose not to know how, as I have decided that if I know how to do everything, then I will HAVE to do everything LOL!!). Dd takes the pictures and downloads them on the computer for her dad because she takes better pictures than he does! They have fun with it.

You'd better watch out though, you can spend lots of hours looking for the better deal on Ebay. At least it happens to me. I have to restrain myself from taking a lot of time searching (I tend to look at everything everyone has to sell). There should be almost anything you want to buy on there, or pretty much everything imaginable. One guy once was selling his soul. Strange, huh?

It's good to see you on here again!! I think any topic can be a homeschool topic. Hope you find the perfect coffee pot! (Did you find the feedback?)

    Good Luck!!
    Kim

also if you want a NEW something or other then look for the initials NIB for new in box or if it has tags it will say NWT new with tags and so on. We bought a meet slicer that was used..... and yuck we never used it because the people didn't even clean it that well. For books, I like going to my secondhand bookstore because we exchange them for credit which gives us more value and we just get to get "new" books. But I have sold cookbooks on E-bay that is my favorite thing to search on e-bay for my self. (and Coke Cola). If you see a little red door on the e-bay page you should click to see what else they sell. or there is also a button to click that says" see my other stuff" I have bought home school books from lady I think her store name is things4kings its McGraw Hill stuff mostly. Don't forget when you sell on E-bay they keep like 3% of the total of your sale. But when you do sell don't forget that the post office has free boxes, two sizes that are flat rate shipping right now its $7.70 I don't know with the rate going up at the post office on the 8th what it will be but usually this is a good option if your item fits in one of the boxes, also they have media mail if you are shipping books, thats the cheaper way to send.

The Post Office has free boxes? How do you get those?

I didn't understand about looking somewhere to see if your things would sell. How would I find that?

How can you buy postage on-line?

How do you deliver or pick up a car or van that is sold on E-Bay?

I'm sooo confused :? Can you tell?!!

Well Deena I can answer a few of question. First one yes the post office have free boxes but I don't think they are free you are paying for them when you pay for the shipping nothing is free GIRL you know that. Any way the flat rate for the box is $7.70 any way in USA you can mail it. What ever you can put in the box they will mail it $7.70.

The van is comes USP LOL no just kidding girl you know me. When we bought my sister in law handicapp van off e bay we meet the guy half way. Thats how we did it. A friend of ours bought a camper off e bay and they had to go all up there to get. It depends on the buyer and what you are looking for and how much they want to sell and if they will meet you half way or not.

    Hope that helps alittle.

If you want to sell say a vase, well to see how many other people are selling the same or simular vase you just type in vase in the search field, or if its a certian type of vase you put that in, and maybe 100 other people are selling vases that are the same kind as your---my be the same brand or shape or size but not the exact one, look to see how much other people are selling theirs for, how many auctions have bids, if none of them have bids you know your wasting your time-- unless you have that one very very special vase. see how much some people are putting down for shipping, etc....

    QUOTE=Kim R]Hi Tina!!

Hey Kim....sooooo good to hear from you too!! You lurker you <big grin>. I wish I could lurk more and chat less sometimes, but you know I love this place.

Yep, you know me I always like the personal touch. It seemed to me like Ebay is so UNpersonal. LOL. But like dh says you don't have to *fall in love* with the appliance guy. ROFL.. Well I do...I like to talk ,visit and chat about it. But what I'm finding out about in reading everything I can on Ebay is that there are a lot of good folks.

I think this is excellent practice for your dd. My folks have yard sales to sell antiques, collectibles and like Dad says *some good ole junky treasures*. Mom wants to start supplementing their income with Ebay since my folks are retired and wants the boys to help her.

So I will be the first brave soul in the family try to Ebay. LOL..

You'd better watch out though, you can spend lots of hours looking for the better deal on Ebay. At least it happens to me. I have to restrain myself from taking a lot of time searching (I tend to look at everything everyone has to sell). It's good to see you on here again!! I think any topic can be a homeschool topic. Hope you find the perfect coffee pot! (Did you find the feedback?)

Yep, I found the feedback button.....that has helped a lot. I can see that some received a bad review .

In reading one comment, the buyer wanted them to ship before the money was received.. well duhhhhhh...So that buyer sent a negative comment but the Seller commented how they had sent 5 out of the last 9 comments negative and how they wanted the item before the money was sent it..The rest of the reviews were rave reviews for that Seller. So that gives TONS of insight....

Anyway, you Lurker you, so good to hear from you....I will have to check for my homeschooling supplies too. After my last boy, I know that in a couple more years, I will have to start getting rid of what I have collected over the last 6 to 7 years..hmmmm...

I am going to find that perfect coffee pot...that has been our biggest issue in homeschooing this week. ROFL ROFL:lol: :p  :p

    Good Luck!!

Kris in Tx, Kim R and Alice...

A few more questions before I place my bid..Well maybe more than a few?

    1. Is there any strategy to bidding later than earlier? The one I'm looking at still has like 6 days. Do I wait till the last minute or let them know up front I'm interested? Yes, No, maybe????

    2. This is really stupid---LOL--but what keeps them from not pulling the item if they don't get what they think they should?

    3. RE: Bidding...On the bottom where you bid..It says to put in *maximum amount*.. If I'm understanding it right--this is the most I am willing to pay for it. Right?

But I certainly don't want to put that amount in right now do I? Or when I'm prompted after I bid the maximum, does it let me give the bid for *right now or starting out bid*.

I'm worried it will go right to my maximum offer I won't see a prompt that will ask me what price do I START OFF bidding out?

    4. Too, if I want to change my maximum bid, can I do that anytime? Or is it sealed once I start bidding?

    5. Phew... I read the Seller's comment about after you win the item--how they want you to contact them w/in x number of days or its relisted.. then do I contact them and arrange how I pay them with paypal by email.

    6. The last one....it said please no hidden cost from Buyer. Does that mean I need to let them know I have paypal but it's a charge card? I think it said that the Seller doesn't get all of the $$$ if it's credit card. Do I divulge that upfront in my bidding? by email? or not all? I don't want to tick someone off the first time I do this, kwim?

Thanks ladies.....for the wonderful free tutorial!!!

LORDY LORDY LORDY...I hope everybody is with me on these questions and explanations.

Tina, I am not listed as any one you want info from but can I answer your questions since I know most of the answers? When you bid and you put in the maximum bid it won't jump to that unless some one else puts in an amount for example if some thing is $2 but you think you would pay $4 for it you type in $4, if no one bids you get the item for $2 if some one else bids then it depends on what they think they would pay, if they put $3.75, they you still out bid them and your bid will be $4 if they want it more than you do they will bid $4.25 (generally things go up in .25 incriments unless its an item of high value) but if the other person says oh, I will pay $4.01 then you get out bid by one cent!! I hate that, how ever once you are out bid you will be notified by e-bay and you will get a chance to up your bid (very adictive sometimes). However, most the time when you find something you want and you get out bid, sooner or later you will find it again. If it says they don't take credit card pay pal then ask about the other ways they take pay pal. If they say contact me with in like 3 days then all you have to do is send an E-mail after you get a winning bidder notification that you will pay on so and so day like say I will pay by Pay Pal on Friday or saturday or I will send you a money order or what ever, the seller just likes to hear from the winning bidder to know when to expect payment. If they have really strange rules on the bidding page then I usually don't buy. Like I said before I got into selling for my mom, I remodeled my kitchen from e-bay stuff (coke cola motif) and trippled my cook book collection---- our first win was a dinky book that we paid a lot for because my husband got in a bidding war with some nurse lady and it became a competition. If you know you really want something and you don't think any one else will bid, then bid, if you wait until the last minute you may forget about it, however some people wait until the last minute to bid on a popular item so that there isn't much of a chance some one will out bid them, They sell software for people that want to bid at the very last second because it normally takes a few seconds at least to finalize your bid. (we have sold items that have been swept right out form someones feet at the very last second I always feel bad for someone thats had the bid from the start then that happens)

    Hi Amy....

I meant to include you in my last post;) ..Thank you so much for your answers, they have all been Soooo very helpful..

Okay, *hold my hand*...here I am..I have now bid on my first item. But I have a few days left as I wanted to bid on something that I have some *breathing room*

What I want to do is avoid is someone sniping me at the last second.

I see that it automatically bids, but does it ask me first or just bids..

I have put in a big enough maximum amount (or at least I think I have)....

I read one post where a girl opens another window and refreshes her bid page. I was wondering can that work for me.

    So one more question here:

I will be watching it to the last second since there aren't many things I want. I WANT this one. LOL--. So even though my maximum amount is there, am I faster by clicking it and *upping it* before someone else does, or does Ebay have to email me first before they up my bid or is Ebay faster than someone doing it at the last second? Clear as mud:roll:
