Eighth-Grade Boy Fights For Right To Wear Makeup

Click to the right to watch the news clip, it's a MUST watch.

Just a part of the article:
A Hamilton teenager is fighting for his right to wear makeup at school, but school leaders say it's a distraction.

"They're gender stereo-typing. He's being sexually discriminated against. Nowhere in the rules does it say that males can't wear make-up" says Mindy Ball. The Hamilton mother says she stands 100% behind her son, 13-year-old Matt Allsup, an eighth grader at Garfield Middle School who wears black eye makeup, lipstick and fingernail polish.

I must say, I am so glad I hs....just another reason.

    How come ...

How come.....children, who are intelligent enough to handle the "Distraction" of a special needs child, with his wheelchair and assistant, who are able to see past his disabilities and learn to appreciate his abilities, who are able to learn from this child....

How come they would suddenly........ be rendered completely unable to function if another child entered the room with long hair.. or makeup?

    Bullcrap!
Kids are FABULOUS at tolerance and adjustments. Much more so than most adults.

This is all just adults being turds.

I find it insulting to kids that adults think that a little hair or differences would be so "Distracting".

Trust me, after day one... it is a non-issue with most kids.

Now, on the other hand, rules are rules and at some point we have to learn that if we are going to be a part of some society or group.. that we have to follow the rules of said group. In this case, the school....

But I still find it insulting that kids would be SOOOOO distracted.. Pa-leeeeeese!

I see exactly what you are saying. As kids in public schools here go to school with mohawks and the tips of the hair are different colors. Chains hainging from their pants, which btw are low.

I don't see how this could be distracting! LOL

Yes, it IS a distraction! Sorry, but the kids ARE concentrating on THAT, rather than on the class. AND it's usually symbolic of a rebellious behavior. Discriminatory? FINE! Then let's just ban the black from ALL the kids...male OR female.

As far as I am concerned, the school has to ban it. After all, they have already banned long hair on males, to much makeup on girls, they have banned any clothing that represent specific sports teams, chains are banned, short skirts are banned, in fact a lot of everyday clothing is being banned and traded in for uniforms or a dress code. How can they ban all this and then allow the boy to wear makeup?

Now, with that said, I am for most of these bans listed. LOL ;)
I am also for banning the boy from wearing makeup for one simple reason. I do not think boys should wear makeup. But if I put my personal opinion aside, how will the school explain allowing this boy to wear makeup when they ban so many other things?

    hehe

I had a strict code in public school growing up I hated it. I was into patches and they wouldnt let us wear them because it might be gang related :? good grief.

I say why NOT...if you dont like your kids being with them then put them in a school with a dress code or homeschool them.

Would I let my son wear makeup NO way-Its a personal choice that we wouldnt allow. I may not like what my neighbors kids may wear and I will raise my eyebrow at them in surprise but I am not going to stop being neighbors or tell there mom your kid is wierd.

We had lots of boys (and girls) wearing makeup in school when I was in HS. The whole "Goth" look. I wouldn't go for it myself, but it was not a distraction. Maybe the first day or two the kid showed up, but essentially teens are like five year olds, right? ;) Now, of course, if he is allowed it WILL be a distraction.

Is this how schools go pro-active? "We can't do anything about guns, bullying, and sex-acts in the halls, but heck, we can make sure our boys don't wear makeup!"

I bet things would be different if the kid wanted to wear cover-up for zits or something?? Kids go through all stages of indipendance, perhaps this just this kids way of being indipendant -- if its the worse thing he is doing, I dont see why it was a big problem.

Oh, please. Like we want our boys wearing make-up and fingernail polish. It is a distraction although the kids will eventually just accept the fact that the kid is a freak.

The kid is a kid. I think it's a little disturbing to condemn him as a "freak".

Personally, I have a soft spot for the "freaks". These are the kids who aren't afraid to stick out, stand up and not be lead by what they think "we want".

    Just thought of something.

I wonder if this gets under some people's skin because they associate make up and nail polish and such with being feminine and this is a boy who's fighting to wear it.

I think that's probably a generation gap thing. A lot of kids today see makeup and such more as gender-neutral tools and decorations, They aren't burdened with our baggage. Sort of like long hair on boys or pants on girls 50 years ago.

    You have a point dawn.

I know I see things this way. I do not think the boy is a freak by far but I still have a problem with boys wearing makeup. It is something I do not think I will ever see as alright. My sister allows her son to bleach his hair. To me, boys don't do that.LOL Call me close minded but I do not like the way it looks. Even Ems isn't allowed to color her hair until she is 18.

    Edited to add:
I do not think less of those who allow their boys to color or bleach their hair. I am crazy about my nephew. I just don't think boys should do this.

Didn't most of the Hair Bands wear makeup of some sort? Was there any question of their intentions?
I watch a magician named Criss Angel, on A&E. That guy wears more eyeliner than I ever did in my 43 years.

Oh heck. All through the 80's we were swooning over Glam Rock/Hair bands like Warrant and Poison. Personally, I was a Twisted Sister fan. Can't get more butch AND more made up then them. :D

We My friends and I) jokingly hung Poison's "Look what the cat dragged in" album cover (YEA VINYL!) near the dressing mirror, as a "Makeup Guide"! hahahaha

At one time, I did not know anyone with short hair, men especially. In fact, my strait laced conservative, multi-million dollar building running husband had but long hair when I married him.
