I know that many of you are probably already set on what you are using next year. So, I am curious what everyone is using, and for what grades. Thank you for feeding my curious mind! Also this helps give me ideas for later on.
I'll bite. I'm gearing A LOT of my curriculum around History. and doing my own version of Sonlight...without doing Sonlight! I'm using Abeka US History (meant for 4th grade) as a spine for my 3rd & 5th Grader. L/A will be historical literature and biographies that fit the time period that we're doing - all vocab, narration, dictation, handwriting, etc. will be geared around that book. Also, I'm going to use the Scott Foresman Grammar and Writing (for just the Grammar portion). And my oldest wll do Daily Grams (got 5th grade free). My oldest will be doing Sequential Spelling Book 2. And my middle will be doing Super TEacher Worksheets spelling with some additions. I'll be using Writing Strands 3 with my oldest, and Writing Strands 2 with my middle. Math will be Lifepacs b/c my kids love them. Not sure on Bible YET. Science will be finishing Considering God's Creation (boy I HOPE!!! LOL ) Art/Music and PE will be covered by our co-op, I think. I hope. Sounds good on paper, doesn't it!
9th grader will use Keystone High school. 8th grader will use Apologia physical science, Jacobs Geometry, BJU English, Wordly Wise, still deciding on foreign language. my will be 8 yr old will do Singapore Math, probably Wordly Wise, maybe BJU English, Zaner-Bloser traditional handwriting. And Considering od's Creation for science. my will be 5 yr old will use a lot of what we have...including handwriting without tears. Both younger children will do stuff like apologia science and various unit studies and such. The younger one will do calendar. That is it.
I haven't made up my mind yet, a lot depends on how much money we have. I am going back and forth of purchasing a science and history curriculum or just doing lapbooks based on things we are interested in. If I do we will be using REAL Science - Life Science and Story of the World level 1. Math - I'm most likely going to get Math U See, I think we need a more hands on approach to math. Not sure what level as I need to test him Reading - we will be reading books that either talk about what we are studying in history or in science Grammer - undecided. I'm not exactly thrilled with Scott Foresmen but it's free, or Spectrum but it's cheap. I haven't really found a grammar program I like yet. Writing and Handwriting will be covered with lapbooks and through history and science Spelling - Spectrum 3rd grade (once we finish spectrum 2nd grade) Art - I have Even More how to teach art, but I am thinking about either tying art into History or getting Artistic Pursuits PE is covered through sports Music - will most likely tie into history
I just realized that for the first time, we're not making any major changes. Staying with My Father's World, Apologia science, MUS, and Explode the Code. Oops, still have to figure out writing. We tried Writing Strands this year and it was a total failure for our family. Otherwise, we're set for next year. Thank goodness as it will be my first year with all three kids officially "doing school"!
The only thing I know for sure is that my daughter will continue to work through Phonics Pathways and my son will continue his cursive practice and 6 year old daughter practice her printing. Everything else is up in the air. I'm toying with the idea of NOEO Chem II for my 10 year son and just reading literature (any ol' story WE happen to want to read at the time ) and possibly having them write a couple stories throughout the year. Copywork is a staple with us but not really a curriculum so don't know if I should mention that. We have been working on Our 24 Family Ways by the Clarkson's and so we will continue that and do the memory work etc. They also do swim lessons and have Choir a couple months of the year. I would love to get them into music lessons (piano and guitar) but time and money are big issues for now. Then of course there's chores and potty training for the youngest but again not a curriculum. LOL If you hear of a good potty training curriculum let me know. That is one thing I have never been good at.
We'll probably be using Aleks Math (pre-algebra) for Catherine and Strayer and Upton's Practical Mathematics for Harry along with some Miquon. Winston Grammar and lots of writing for Catherine. Lots of reading for Harry. Other then that it will mostly be unschooling I think.
My stuff is mostly bought. For Rachael (grade 10) Notgrass World History (Bible, History, and World Lit, all three in one) Teaching Textbooks Pre-Cal French Cont. AWANAS for Bible Apologia Chemistry Faythe and Phillip: Apologia General Science (Faythe) Mystery of History 3 Rod and Staff grammar A secular pre-Alg book for Faythe Saxon for Phillip AWANAS for Phillip's Bible Pt. 2 of "Hind's Feet on High Places" for Faythe's Bible In addition, we will be taking a trip to the Creation Museum next week. I'm undecided for Science for Phillip, and will look at what they have there. I've already warned Carl I may be buying something! Rachael will also be taking Chemistry at the co-op for her Lab. She's also interested in taking Debate there, and I'm hoping they'll offer French (this year it was only Spanish).
Garrett, 5th grade: Math: TT6 Grammar/writing: Writing Strands.. since he is a very reluctant writer we will start with level 2, but I got 3 and 4 also. Spelling: http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html Science.. maybe R.E.A.L Science Odyssey Chemistry, or unit studies Social Studies: I want to cover the states and presidents, also some government stuff.. we will probably use a unit study approach here. Reading.. just falls into where ever. I do have a list of books I want him to read, but he is free to read what ever for the most part. Music: www.classicsforkids.com Art: He draws and things all the time PE and Health: I want to cover the body systems, playing outside covers PE.
Ok for ds, 7, he just finished K, so we will start back up with 1st, we will use all abeka for him. we will not do the reading program, bc i feel he already has a love for reading, i will just go with it. we will go slower on their writing bc i feel it is overkill! and everything else will be fairly by the book. for dd, 8, we will be changing math. i have debated changing her for the past year, and we decided to stick it out and try, but it is just too fast for her. we didnt even totally finish 2nd grade yet, but i decided since im switching her, we would just do placement testing and see where we needed to start. that is just one of the many reasons i think CLE is going to be excellent for math. we can test and order the Light Units we need without ordering the whole grade. She testing in the middle of 2nd grade, which isnt too bad, so we will be working on finishing 2nd gr with CLE and then as long as we like it we will order the 3rd grade. For everything else we will stick with Abeka, but Lang Arts may go next year, we will hve to see. I am def liking the idea of Abeka for K-2, and then reevaluating from there. It gave her an excellent foundation, even in math where she struggles, and especially in phonics. I do love Abeka History and Science as a spine. My dc love that also.
Math - SOS 4th & 8th Science - only my son - SOS Year 3 for dd using Ambleside. I'm working on the schedule this week. Year 5 Ambleside for my son (again working on schedule this week) Bible will be done partly through church and partly through history.
For DD12: She's Doing Sonlight Core 7 (History, LA and Bible) Continuing on with Saxon 7/6 until finished, then on to 8/7. Worldy Wise 7 Apologia Gen. Science. Rod and Staff English 6 With a little LLATL thrown in. Art, Music, PE...will be whatever we get in to. For DDs8 Sonlight Core 3/4 (History, LA and Bible) Saxon 5/4, then 6/5 Wordly Wise 4 Our own piece mealed science. Rod and Staff English 4 LLATL here and there Same for Art, etc. We are schooling year round...so we don't really HAVE a next year...just continue one with one thing till we are done, then move on to the next.
April, ok, clue me in! How on earth is your 8 yr old dd in like 4 or 5th grade work, lol? My 8 year old is doing good to get to 3rd this coming up year, and we have always taken the slow approach, but now im wondering how we are doing looking at what your dd is doing.
I'm not April but for us, DS will be 8 / 9 when he goes into his technically 3rd grade year but he will be doing 4th grade and maybe some 5th grade work by then. He started out a year above and went to a school that worked a year above so we are staying a year above grade level. If we move faster, we move faster, there are some things we can do that for. Right now he's in 1st working on 2nd grade, we will finish this up over the summer and move on to 3rd grade.
The reason we homeschool is to not compare our children to other children Remember we do what works for our children, some work ahead, some work behind, and a few even work right on target.
Because they are smarter than I am..lol. They'll be 9 soon, but have been doing 4th grade level work since December. It's nothing I've done though...they were PS students up until last October. Don't feel bad. My 12 yr old dd is still doing mostly 6th grade stuff in math and english...and will technically be a 7th grader this year. It's all about the kid.
4th and 7th grade together: LALightning Lit 7 - I will have to tweak it for ds#2 and I don't know on grammar (we are doing the Complete book of...over the summer so some of that maybe??) Bible - How to study your bible for kids Science - we are going to use a textbook table of contents and find stuff on the internet (we will see how that goes) I might do COMOM's forensic study. (who does not like dead things!!) Spelling Powernot technically together, but both will use this. Historyhave almost decided on COMOM's middle ages...plus NM History and then we will see. 7th grade MathSaxon 8/7 (this summer we are doing the complete book of geometry and algebra...so maybe pre algebra next year...) Bandat the middle school Lots of reading (I hope) PE weights(at home with dad) and Dance 4th Math...either Saxon 5/4 or 6/5...we will test here in a bit. (he is coming out of ps) ArtArtistic pursuits and he has asked for spanish...I might have both of them do that....but when? other than that...unschooling. (ha ha ha ha)
For ds 8 (3rd grade): Ambleside Year 2 Complete Book of Math Grades 3/4 Math Blaster CD-Rom Elementary Earth Science (McQuerry) Weekly Outdoor Nature Challenges (handbookofnaturestudy.com) LiveMocha Social Spanish Weekly Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes (religion) For dd 12 (8th grade): Teaching Textbooks (Pre Algebra) LiveMocha Social Spanish Writing Strands Level 3
We're going back to My Father's World (www.mfwbooks.com) next year. I did my own thing for social studies (world geography) this year, and it has been ok, but it confirmed that I really need structure (not a surprise). That includes history, science, and Bible. We're going to finish Singapore Math 2 with Joy over the summer and just keep going. If we homeschool Katie, we'll start her off with Singapore 1. We've been doing Rod & Staff English 3 this year. I haven't decided if we're going to keep doing it or if we're going to go to something else. Joy doesn't mind doing the grammar stuff (I always thought diagramming sentences was fun, too), but I don't think she actually NEEDS it so intensely yet... Still thinkin' about it. We'll continue with Sequential Spelling for Joy. We'll do handwriting practice with both of them. Joy is ready to start learning cursive. We're also going to start Easy Spanish (http://www.theeasyspanish.com/).
